I agree with Helen, such commentary on a public forum and particularily considering that this date is an important day for the global commemoration of Armistice Day - to remember our war dead.

Comments expressed by Arianwen are not just in very bad taste, but disrespectful as well.

Sorry you found that TMI, Helen. ;) Belochka, I removed the post, as it obviously offended you, and I apologise that you found it insulting. It was far from my intention, as I thought it might give a little bit of levity to the thread. As I had family that fought and died in WWI, I would never disrespect the veterans. 11 November just also happens to be my anniversary, so please try to understand that the day is far more to me than just Armistice Day. Yes, I treasure the day because it gave me my daughter, the light of my life, and also because it's the day I began my life with my husband. Therefore, I choose to celebrate life on that day, the life that I have thanks to the sacrifices made by the veterans on all sides we remember on that day. 'Don't mourn the death, celebrate the life', as the Irish say.

With respect,
Arianwen

Forum Announcements / Re: My honor to Laura Mabee
« on: November 07, 2005, 09:49:56 PM »
I consider Laura a sister in all but biology, so I can't help but reiterate all that's been said about her. She'll drop everything to help a person in need, and even when the situation seems to have no relief, she somehow finds it. Laura is the sunflower that John spoke of in 'Calendar Girls': 'The flowers of Yorkshire are like the women of Yorkshire. Every stage of their growth has its own beauty, but the last phase is always the most glorious, yhen very quickly they all go to seed. *laughter* Which makes it ironic my favourite flower isn't even indigenous to the British Isles, let alone Yorkshire. I don't think there's anything on this planet that more trumpets life that the sunflower. For me, that's because of the reason behind its name, not because it looks like the sun but because it follows the sun. During the course of the day, the head tracks the journey of the sun across the sky, a satellite dish for sunshine. Wherever light is, no matter how weak, these flowers will find it, and that's such an admirable thing, and such a lesson in life.'

You're my sister in every way that counts, you're a remarkable human being, and I only hope I can be like you one day. *hug*

With all the love and respect that I possess, to my sunflower
Ari

PS. Don't cry, or I'll cry with you...lol

The Tudors / Re: The 'She-Wolf' of France

Most of you will find this amusing, but I just picked up Alison Weir's biography of her. ;) 'Queen Isabella', out this year, though I'm not sure how many weeks/months ago. I loved it, really, and she makes an extremely compelling case for Edward II not being murdered at all, or if he was, for Isabelle not to have been involved. Also, that IF Edward II was murdered, poison or starvation would have been the most likely means, or a stabbing if they really felt like being violent.

What surprised me was just how long Edward and Isabelle had a successful, affectionate marriage. It was something like ten to fourteen years, which really shocked me, for whatever reason. When it went downhill, though, it REALLY went down...

The Tudors / Re: Elizabeth I and Henry VIII
« on: October 23, 2005, 12:12:46 PM »
You know, 'ditto' just gets old after a while...;)

I think after Elizabeth's experiences with her mother, her step-mothers, her sister, etc, just to discuss the women for a moment, she had complete grounds not to want marriage or sex. Loss of virginity ---> loss of self-sovereignty ---> loss of actual sovereignty ---> loss of life? Kathryn Howard was executed for having sex, basically, and Anne Boleyn was executed on the false charges of adultery. It could be argued that had Anne not given in to Henry, she would have stayed alive. That alone has to hit a child hard, to know that your father killed your mother for not bearing a son. I think there was probably also an element of responsibility in Elizabeth for Anne's death, and she likely wished at times that she had been born a boy so that she could have had her real mother. Perhaps she felt she owed it to Anne not to make the same mistakes and end up dominated by her husband. Elizabeth was fiercely independent, but so was Anne...

I think Elizabeth really wanted her father's approval. Getting close to her step-mothers was risky, given the rate at which they were discarded, but her father was the more permanent fixture. Henry was a scholar, so Elizabeth became one. Henry was a musician, so Elizabeth took up music. Henry was an enthusiastic dancer and horseman, so Elizabeth made sure she was the best at dancing and riding. I think she took her similarities with Henry and played them up for all they were worth.

Based on that jaw, I'm guessing a Hapsburg. Eleanor of Austria, wife of Francis I of France?

As for our first mystery lady, this is going to sound daft, but Jane Seymour?

LOL--I get that too. Just shurg them off until you find the right one.

I wish I could say they'd mature, but so few do. *sigh* I had a married man at the paint store proposition me the other day, and I have to fend off the manky gits who don't understand that a woman can be happily taken and NOT be interested in anyone else. The ones who are fairly mature as teens tends to be the more mature men, from what I've found. Duchess is right, though: when you find the right one, hold on for dear life.

Duchess, I'm REALLY glad you have someone who treats you that well. He sounds like quite the bloke. :)
