Joanna, wow! It has been a long time since we communicated, but I'm not surprised in the slightest that you have such an interesting blog because you always sent me the most wonderful treats by email! I would love to read your book in the future. It sounds enthralling.

I think Alexei is standing in the water at the end of the plank you can see in these two pictures, Maria on her stilts behind him.

Wonderful! Are the walls completely padded in the corridor? And, I guess, a few of the rooms too.

I think it is thé Alexander palace 1917. First because we have other pictures with prince Dolgorouki ans this Gard, I Will post one alter on. Second because of the Tsar'decorations. He wore only bis St George's cross, without anything else. As for Maria she is very thin here. As she was after her illness. What do you think about this?

But where at the AP? It's not Alexandra's balcony- the floor doesn't match and the windows are too high. Here's a photo for comparison.

Could it be the terrace off of the Semi-Circular Hall?

I was looking at some photos of corridors in Livadia on http://livadia.russian-women.net and none of the doors are painted white. Maybe they were when the Romanovs lived, but I'm thinking they probably weren't. So I'm leaning towards the caption being wrong, as Sarushka suggested.

EmmyLee, to clarify, are you saying that the photograph posted by KarinK is of the Alexander Palace? Because it states very clearly under the photograph she posted that it is was taken at the palace at Livadia....

Oh. Well, I can't read Russian. Just thought the doorway looked a lot like the one from the photos I posted. Never mind, then.

It's actually the same man. According to Shawn Kailian on his Alexander Palace Facebook group page: "...this man went by the name "Al Chromium" that is how Google Chrome translates it as. He was part of the NKVD and this photograph was taken in 1938 at the Alexander Palace when it was used as a sanatorium for the NKVD. It is from the personal archive (though made public by courtesy of www.tsarselo.ru) of Anna Larina. This was her grand-father."

With Petrov, 1913.

I think this is in the corridor outside Alexei's rooms. Compare with these photos from the similar corridor on the other side of the palace, specifically, the windows above the door.
