Books about the Romanovs and Imperial Russia / Re: Memoirs Recommendations
« on: November 30, 2014, 05:16:40 PM »

Sophie Buxhoeveden's  are the best. Her book "The Life & Tragedy of Alexandra Feodorovna Empress of Russia"  for me  has never been equaled .

Sophie's Left Behind" is also terrific. She also has one "Before the Storm" I believe. pre-revolution left me wanting more. only because it opened up so much interest in her.

Lili Dehn's 'The Real Tsaritsa", is written in that odd style I'm not fond of, but good too.

A great memoir if you can get your hands on is "Revolutionary Days, Recollections of the Romanoff's And Bolsheviki 1914-1917" by Princess Cantacuzene,Countess Speransky, Nee Grant. The grand daughter of President Grant. She was close to Grand Duke Nicholas N. Fascinating read. She's quoted often in the new book on N.N.

One review gave it 3 stars, all the rest 5. It's a great book !  Worth every penny, Marie Pavlovna is a great subject & this book (the only one I believe on her) does her justice.  Anyone who loves books on the Romanov's should have it in their collection !

The Habsburgs / Re: Assassination/Archduke by King and Woolmans

I just finished reading it last week & enjoyed it very, very much.

Great book, & really interesting subjects. One of history's "Great If's" had  Franz Ferdinand ended up on the   throne of Austria-Hungary.

I really enjoyed reading a book devoted to Michael A. I also found much new information.

Certainly a book worth reading. The war years & the time in Perm were full of interesting stories.

Diaries in war & Revolution, Russia 1914 to 1920 & France 1939 to 1947. Very good book from the diaries  of Anastasia V. Hendrikoff's sister-in-law Olga.

Her brother Peter's wife ( I never knew she had a brother). Interesting how Kerensky allowed the families of the people going into exile with the Imperial Family   go to the Alexander Palace & say" goodbye". Also talks of the death of her other sister-in-law Inochka (Alexandra) during the Civil war.
And how the Henrikoff family went bankrupt & The Czar bought their house & helped the Family after the death of V.A.Hendrikoff in 1912(Anastasia's father)

The Russian part is smaller than the French, but the Emigre experiences in Nazi occupied Paris are very well worth reading. She was accused by the Nazi's of being a spy.

Both books found very nice homes.

I really enjoyed this book, it's a sad picture of the oppression of the Jewish community. And shows the atrocities of the Nazi's was

already in movement well before the 1930ies.

I just finished this book, & really enjoyed it. A very fast read. I never really had allot of interest in Catherine or that era, but this book

has changed that.  It's on sale at Amazon now for about $ 19 dollars, so it's a very good deal.

That's great to hear, a few years ago the wife of Catherine's great or great-great nephew was on here.

 Thanks for the information.

Has it ever been mentioned here what happened to Kitty ? As Elizabeth & Catherine met a similar fate ?
