The Imperial Family / Re: Historical Anecdotes
« on: March 26, 2005, 03:29:02 AM »
I love to read stories of OTMAA.  To know they were regular children though they lived in a palace.  The children were involved in mischief just like other children.  It makes them so real somehow.

If "morgantic" had popped up only once, it would have been a typo. It kept coming up that way, so it was obvious there was a lack of understanding of the term was, and perhaps a lack of understanding of what it means.

You do have a point about tone, though. We are not always perceived how we intend to be. I don't think I was snippy, but if someone sees this, it was surely not intended.

Even if some of those who post here are considered experts, it's important to remain on one's best behavior - and I appreciate being corrected when my facts are wrong. Maybe others don't, but if I didn't know what a morganatic marriage was, I would appreciate being told.

I simply read the word wrong.  I looked at it several times and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.  When it was pointed out, I felt quite dull.  I was aware what the term meant.  I just just didn't see the spelling error or typo.

Thank you, Ella.  I have been here for months and still don't feel totally comfortable posting as yet.  I thought I knew a lot about the IF.  Compared to some of you, I know very little.

Any pics of KR and Sandro together?  I would love to see that one.   :)

How about one of KR and his wife?  I have only seen one picture of them.

Thank you.

Thank you.

I think the man standing between KR and Nicholas is Peter Of Oldenburg?  Olga Alexandrovna's husband.

Nor is "morgantic."  So let's start with proper word usage here.

What would be the correct term?

I would have liked to have known Sandro.  His strong personality and forceful opinions intrigue me.

KR.  He is sensitive.  I have always felt an attraction towards him.  His poetic and tortured soul.

NAOTMAA goes without saying.  They are what started this for me 26 years ago.

I have always believed Nicholas abdicated for the good of Russia.  When it became clear that the country would be immersed in civil war and revolution if he remained on the throne, he abdicated.

For Nicholas his life had been spent in duty to his country and people.  While he was weak and made many errors in judgment he ruled with a pure heart.  IMHO.

In the end, he gave his throne up to save Russia.

I must agree.  George would not have remained Tsarevich if he married morganatically.

Considering the scandal over Misha's marriage, he was only the Tsar's brother not the Tsarevich at the time.  Though the "reason" for his marriage was Alexei's near death at Spala.

I can't imagine George would contract such a marriage.  Or that if such a marriage occurred no one would know about it or mention it.

As much as this family wrote and corresponded, something would have become known.

Imperial Russian Antiques / Re: Romanov Items/Souvenirs that You Own
« on: March 09, 2005, 04:05:21 AM »
I have a friend from the Ukraine.  He knows my passion for the Romanovs and Nicholas II in particular.  Every year he visits the Ukraine for several months.  In 2001 he asked me what I would like my gift to be.  I said something gold with Nicholas.  Little did I dream of the treasure he would bring me, a gold Russian ruble.  It is 5 rubles.  Nicholas is on the front and the back is the Russian Imperial double-headed eagle.  It is from 1898.  The edge of the coin has Cyrillic lettering.  He set it in a gold bezel and I wear it on a pendant.  I never take it off.

I cried when he gave it to me.  To own this lovely coin means so much to me.  For years, I have been fascinated by Russian history, especially NAOTMAA.  They are close to my heart and so is my beautiful ruble.  I will treasure it always.

I was in school in the 70's in the US.  As sophmores we were required to take either Modern Europe or a class about Asia.  (It's been too long for me to remember what the other class was called.)  I chose Modern Europe.  It was first hour and was quite boring until we began learning about WWI.

The Russian Revolution fascinated me.  I checked out several books on Lenin.  I read the Communist Manifesto.  The teacher and I to the exclusion of the class used to discuss Lenin and the revolution.  I loved it.  I recieved an A in the class.

That was the only class that I learned anything about Russian history.

When my daughter was in high school in 1999 she was in World Geography.  The teacher told the class that the Romanovs had been executed in a field and that he had seen the video.  I couldn't believe it.  My daughter told the teacher he was wrong.  He didn't didn't believe her.  I called the school.  I spoke to the teacher.  I explained that I had been studying the Russian Revolution and the Romanovs for over 20 years.  He said I certainly knew a lot more than he did about it.  My daughter took "The Last Tsar" in to show him the picture of the cellar room.  The next week he had the book!  I hope he learned something from the experience. ::)
