Thank You Antonio - you know so much!
I'll check my map to see if I can locate it.
This will probably get off the topic of GD Olga but is there an area or street or a number of streets in St. Petersburg that was/were exclusive residences of royalty or the rich-and-famous?
Thanks so much
Cathy

Would anyone have any idea where the palace in St. Petersburg that GD Olga and her first husband (resided before the revolution) was located?
Thanks so much
Cathy

Dear JM
Being Canadian too - I love our history!!  From the first tent city in today's Quebec City to the building of the railroad to unite our vast country to the Indians to S. Moodie and C. Parr Traill.
And July 1st. is fast approaching.
That said - I love the world too.  My ancestors are from Greece and Britain and I love exploring their history.
And since I was a young girl, I have loved Russian history. So much to enjoy.

Dear Lisa Marie
Another way to 'learn' about a country is via video (what a 'dummie' solution - but it is fun!!) - there is a video 'Nicholas and Alexandra'.
Have fun.

OK Simon
I'll put the book in the mail on Saturday.  Of course, I would love your book.
Thanks Cathy

I have watched Russain Ark - it was in English subtitles.  I watched it the first time to read the subtitles because I had to know what they were saying!  But then I watched it without reading - it is as wonderful as being there - I walked in their footsteps through each room reliving my footsteps.  It was a camcorder that I did not have during my own visit.

Dear Simon
I have been fasinated with your thread and your family history and your research. Thanks. And thank you Joanna for starting a new thread!
I have Michael Ignatieff's 'The Russian Album' and loved it - it's a keeper. And I've just bought Alan Morehead's 'The Russian Revolution' to mail to my sister for the pictures only.
I also have 'The Russian Revolution' by Ira Peck 1967 that has a picture of the Tsar with his Cossack bodyguards in their 'coat' uniforms.  I think that your g-g-grandfather maybe in it - the 3rd from the left (based on your initial picture and my very untrained eye). Would you like the book - I could mail it to you, if you are interested?
The revolution is not my passion - I buy these books second hand for pennies so they may not be quality but they sometimes have interesting pictures.  I do not keep the books myself.
Cheers Cathy

And Bob, do you have any theories about '...the former curator of the palace who was killed in a mysterious car wreck a few months later..'?
Thanks, Cathy

Dear Bob
To say again, you must have terrific photo albums - thanks for sharing so much with us - of course, I would love to see more - do you have this room (and others) showing the damage after WWII and before the repairs?
Thanks

Oh Antonio - Yikes!  I'm so sorry I did mean Antonio and not Dominic in my post above; please forgive me. And again thanks so much for the platform information. Have you read about this in a book?

Thanks Bob so much - your picture is terrific!  It compliments one of mine that shows the pond full.  And I can see the bright green of the trees and grass; my picture was taken in May when everything looked quite brown and desolate.  I think summer would be a better time to visit to see life (in nature at least) and dream in living colour.
And Dominic, thanks so much for the platform information - I did not know about it.  And, my pictures do not show the iron scrollwork on the pillars either.  So they were removed or stolen (?) between Bob's picture and mine in 1996. Too bad.
When was your picture taken, Bob?
Thanks, Cathy

Dear Christine
The information you have just provided is worth a thousand pictures - although, come to think of it, I would love a thousand pictures.  I will be content now to let the memories of the Children's House withstand time.  And hopefully the weather.
Thanks so very much for your detailed information.  How do you know so much?  Do you visit often?
Cathy
