This one is a three parter. There are some quite shocking execution scenes in the first episode, including a crushing so be warned. Other than that, I found "Gunpowder" deadly dull.

I watched it and enjoyed it. If it introduces people to history long may it continue.
Meanwhile, on BBC4 there is a 3 parter on the Hapsburgs by Simon Seabag Montifiore ( what is it with that name!!!). That is worth a watch too.

Oh I just love The Private Life of Henry VIII ! I know its a load of old toot but Merle Oberon is breathtaking as Anne Boleyn.

Well there are masses of good books out there to enjoy.
Six Wives of Henry VIII by David Starkey is excellent and imo the best out of a choice of Antonia Fraser and Alison Weir.
For Catherine of Aragon, my go to book is " Catherine of Aragon, Henry's Spanish Queen" by Giles Tremlett.
For Anne Boleyn, no Tudor bookshelf is complete without " The Life And Death of Anne Boleyn", by Eric Ives.
So there is a starter for you.x

Very much so I am afraid. Charles/Carlos Mundy is on Facebook at the moment telling us that there is momentous news about to hit the world. A group of historians are going to show that the whole family including the Tsar, survived..........
Of course, the DNA results were fabricated and, guess what, AA really was Anastasia's and Magda really was Olga..........well, he has got a book to sell hasn't he, bless. :-)

There is something definitely " off " about that portrait. It looks very naive for one thing. Would be interesting to know wether the portrait has been dated by art specialists wouldn't it?

Hi Laura. Not going to be much help but I only have a few ( rather tatty and old ) paperbacks on Elizabeth 1st.....she is not my most favourite historical figure, ( Treason). I think there is a rather nice book written by Anne Somerset out there you might want to have a look at though. Maybe a Liz fan will come to your aid although these boards are painfully quiet recently.
