Their World and Culture / Re: Resteth With the Saints
« on: March 05, 2008, 08:39:49 PM »
I can't believe that I have stumped the panel for once!.....LOL.  I thought for sure that one of my Orthodox friends out there would be able to give me more on this.  I would appreciate any input even if you don't have the exact words to this psalm/prayer.  I just think that knowing the spirituality of the Imperial Family......especially in the final weeks of their lives....this psalm/prayer would have to be something deep and beautiful.  I always appreciate all and any of your insights and thoughts no matter what they are!

In several of the accounts of the last church services that the imperial family attended before their execution, it is mentioned that when the prayer or song entitled Resteth With the Saints was said that they fell to their knees and one of the grand duchesses began to cry.  Are the words and/or music to this ancient psalm available anywhere?  It sounds like it would be beautiful.

In the book, "The Last Tsar" by Edvard Radzinsky there are many exerpts from both of their diaries and letters to each other.   It is an interesting read.....but gets a little boring towards the end because the author belabors the discovery of and the investigation of the imperial family's bones.

The Final Chapter / Re: why did the kill the children?
« on: November 28, 2007, 05:54:33 PM »
I believe you are right, clockwork.  Leaving any witnesses could only be trouble for the revolutionaries........and the children would only have been an added burden for them as far as where to house them.  They were a liability no matter which way you look at it.

IMHO, I believe that Nicholas was not guilty because of his great wealth, but because of his great stupidity.  Also...his father is equally, if not more, to blame for not preparing him better for the role of tsar.

Their World and Culture / patronyms
« on: April 05, 2007, 07:31:49 PM »
is there a rule as to whether a russian female's patronym ends in "ovna" or "evna"?  this always confuses me.  thanks for any help.

i know that the custom during victorian times was for women to ride a horse side saddle.  i have always been curious about the side saddle, having never seen one.  how does a person ride ahorse that way without slipping off of it?  it looks like it would be very difficult to ride that way....not to mention the discomfort.  if anyone knows anything about the side saddle.....please enlighten me.  thanks.

The Windsors / Re: Books on British royalty (non-Tudor)
« on: January 28, 2007, 08:26:42 PM »
As a Christmas present, I got "Queen Victoria, A Personal History" by Christopher Hibbert.  It has lots of good photos.  I have just started reading it and it seems pretty good so far although i am only into the third chapter.  Does anyone have an opinion on this biography?

Alexandra Feodorovna / Re: Alix's Engagement and Wedding
« on: October 31, 2006, 10:04:47 PM »
I am wondering why Queen Victoria did not attend Alix's wedding?  I have never yet read anything on this.  I find it quite odd that since Alix's mother was dead that QV did not figure that it would be important for her to be there in Alice's place.  Also, Alix was supposedly QV's favorite granddaughter.  Does anyone have any theories or facts about this?
