Looks correct to me!

Nice to have them all gathered together.

For whom could she mourning in 1913?

I don't think she's wearing mourning. The fabric and style don't look right for that. I think it's more likely just a dark dress.

I think the ones of Olga in the dark dress and hat were taken in an upstairs window at the Alexander Palace. Somewhere I have an exterior photo that shows the bars on the children's windows....

A little small for Ortipo. Possibly one of Ortipo's puppies? I don't remember the date offhand, but Ortipo had a litter sometime in 1915 or 1916, which would be consistent with Tatiana's clothing and hairstyle.

The Final Chapter / Re: Tobolsk Plays

Here's the one of Anastasia dressed as a boy. I found it on Pinterest, pinned from the OTMA Palace Tumblr blog.

It's not Anastasia. The caption in the book is incorrect. This was debated a number of years ago here, and we came to the conclusion that not only is the resemblance to Anastasia questionable, but the porch doesn't match any of the known photos of the governor's mansion at Tobolsk.

I believe this was taken at Vyrubova's house. The man between Olga and Anastasia looks like Sablin to me.

I don't recall ever reading anything like that.

I think you're right — it could be Olga with her hair down.

If you look closely at some of the tennis pictures, you'll see Anastasia's wearing sandals rather than tennis shoes. There's a dark pair that's very easy to spot -- once you see them, you'll wonder why you never noticed before -- and a light pair that's pretty hard to see against her white stockings. You have to look for the buckles. If the sandals are any indication, the problem doesn't seem to have developed until around 1913-14.

I know which sandals you're talking about, but I never considered the fact Anastasia might have been wearing them to accommodate her foot deformity. Is that what you were getting at?

Yep. It's something Peter Kurth mentioned a while back. Otherwise I don't know whether I would have made that connection, either.

Having Fun! / Re: people's fascination with true crime and the Romanovs
« on: January 15, 2015, 11:42:59 AM »
Is it a prurient interest in true crime that fuels the lingering interest in the Romanovs? After all, they've been dead almost a century.

I don't know the answer, but I've noticed the connection, too. Romanov fans tend to be interested in the same events, many of which feature profoundly unhappy endings: Anne Frank, Titanic, etc.

I'm no different — my next book is on the Lizzie Borden case.

I've noticed this before but have never mentioned it until now

The GDs had HUGE feet!

Oh good -- I'm not the only one who's noticed that. I brought it up years ago. I'll have to see if I can find the post -- I believe I might have used the word "boat" to describe them :^)

Good call Tim. Bunions to be exact. Never heard about her needing a special shoe but I guess it's possible.
