Nicholas II / Re: Nicholas II and Anti-Semitism.
« on: June 11, 2006, 02:06:03 PM »
I'm afraid to sound ignorant;  but I have always been an ardent Nicholas and Alix fan, but I confess to be interested  in them as a couple and a family---I'm not so interested in politics.  I admire the depth and strength of their faith, and the way their religion was an all-encompassing part of their lives.  But I just read a piece about Nicholas's intolerance, even cruel treatment, toward the Jews.  As a Christian, I very much have difficulty reconciling these attitudes and actions with Christ's teaching, especially since they have been made saints.  As a logtime fan of the family, this troubles me.  I would be grateful to hear others' thoughts and feelings on the subject. Thanks! :-? :-/

Palaces in the Crimea / Re: Livadia websites
« on: May 16, 2006, 11:17:31 PM »
I wonder if there is an actual website of the palace as a museum, where one might be able to shop in the gift/bookstore?  If there is, I sure can't find it.  Also, I was reading through one of the topics from someone (like me!) desperate to find floor plans, and I came across an old entry from Greg King saying he had some schematics.  He suggested ordering a back copy of Atlantis magazine, which I can't find; he also said to e-mail him, but my computer wouldn't work when I pushed his e-mail button (I am old and severely computer-challenged...) and I don't know his address.  I just bought and read his new book "In the Court of the Last Tsar", which I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend; but I was disappointed that in his section on palace plans, he didn't include Livadia, or the Lower Palace at Alexandria Peterhof.  Anybody have any advice?  Sorry so verbose...

The Final Chapter / Otma DNA---hemophilia carriers?
« on: May 16, 2006, 10:30:22 PM »
I wondered if tests could be done on the remains of the 3 grand duchesses to see if they carried the gene for hemophilia, as their mother did---I'm not very well-versed on DNA studies, and wonder if it would be possible.  It would be interesting to know...

Alexandra Feodorovna / Re: Alix's Engagement and Wedding

Thank you for your replies!  I was interested in what Ortino said about Marfa Mouchanov---I read the book not too long ago, and she had such negitivity ( for instance, she had a whole chapter about what a not-too-nice person Grand Duchess Elizaveta Feodorovna was).  I was surprised by her negative slant, and I have wondered why she wrote the things she did.  Does anyone know why she wrote that way?

Imperial Russian History / Re: Orthodox worship practices

Thank you, pookiepie, for answering---your info was very interesting, and I don't think one can ever receive too much knowledge!  I'm new to this forum (and computers---I'm a cyber-moron), and I am reveling in the wealth of info I've found here.  I never dreamed there were so many others who share my interests!  Anyhow, thanks again!

Imperial Russian History / Orthodox worship practices #3
« on: May 11, 2006, 08:33:10 PM »
I would like to know if Russian Orthodox worshipers stand throughout the church service, or if they are seated.  I don't see pews or chairs in the interior photos of the churches.  I also wonder how often they receive Holy Communion;  I read somewhere that they take it once a year only.  As an Episcopalian who receives the Eucharist weekly, and takes great comfort from it, once a year seems rather sparse.  Perhaps someone knows of a place that talks about the rituals of the Orthodox Church.  Thanks

I just bought this book, and it is great, as Greg King's other books are!  A good addition to my Romanov collection, and I recommend it.

I have read often about Alix's ring being a pink pearl; however, I recently read ( I think it was in the book by Marfa Mouchanow, but not positive) that her engagement ring was a magnificent pink diamond ring.  Does anyone know about such a ring?  Thanks!

I have read that many of Alix's clothes exist in several different places, such as the Hermitage, Pavlosk, and Tsarskoe Selo.  I have seen pictures of a few, but I am wondering if photos exist of all her remaining clothes, and if there has ever been a book or catalogue of them all.  Thanks!

Thanks for answering so promptly---I must confess to being a computer illiterate, and I was so excited to find this resource, I posted questions that I subsequently found answers to once I started digging in the forum.  I must praise everyone who have done such wonderful, dedicated work!  I'm so happy to find answers, and people who share my interests, I could jump for joy!

Nicholas II / The Tsar's Power
« on: April 27, 2006, 04:35:52 PM »
I wonder why, since Nicholas II was an autocrat and all-powerful ruler, he didn't just change the laws of succession to include females.  Knowing of the anxiety and desperation to have an heir, and producing one daughter after another, I wonder why he didn't change it.  Does anyone know?

The Alexander Palace / Alix's bathroom
« on: April 27, 2006, 03:14:24 PM »
I have been wondering about the configuration of Alix's bathroom---where was the tub and toilet, where was the staircase to the children's rooms, etc.  I'm also curious about the toilet and oratory on either side of N & A's bed---anyone know what was where?  My husband thinks I'm weird about wanting to know about a bathroom---call it feminine curiosity---I like to know as much as possible!  Thanks!

Palaces in the Crimea / Re: Livadia's floorpalns
« on: April 27, 2006, 02:47:32 PM »
I have never been in any forum, and I hope I'm doing it right!  I stumbled on this forum by accident, and was thrilled and fascinated!  I had no idea there were folks with the same interests and questions I have!  Anyhow, I have been trying to find the floor plans for the Livadia palace for years with no luck---also for Nicholas and Alexandra's New Palace at Alexandria Peterhof.  Also would be interested to find plans for the Cottage at Peterhof.  Maybe someone has some info, please?
