Nicholas II / "fateful number" 17 for Nicholas II
« on: September 12, 2010, 04:07:10 PM »
I found it odd that the "fateful number 17" played a key role in Nicholas II's life.  17 October 1888 imperial train crashes at Borki, and Alexander III and others narrowly escaped tragedy.  17 October 1905 the Nicholas signed the famous manifesto of civil liberties and thus, according to some, signed his own death warrant.  Fatal year 1917 of the dynasty begans, during which there were two revolutions.  And finally, on the night of July 17, 1918 in Yekaterinburg on the orders of Lenin's government, Nicholas II and his family was shot.

Odd? Or another coincidence?  Very errie!

PS. After his death, Raputin's body was exposed to fire, water, and wind! Coincidence?

Pers, I am sorry that is shocking, dear friend, but yes, they were all desecrated, all of them, to the last, please see Belochka's post below.  Again, all of us in the Emigration knew this, and my grandmother (my grandfather and my grandmother's three sisters had already been liquidated by that time, as well as my aunt) vividedly remember the parading-around of these dug-up skeletons, some of strung up lamppost style.  It went for two-or-three months.  And yes, they dug and blasted...why do you think that the Krepost was off limits for nearly 80 years and that it is in such a dilapidated state?  Shocking beyond shocking.  But they did the same thing in France nearly 130 years before.  Something disgusting about it.

I believe Belochka is correct.  The burial vaults are there but it is anyone's best guest if (a) any person is really buried there and (b) if there is a person that is buried there, whether or not it is indeed the person named on the tomb.
Nearly everyone doubts it.  Everyone then, everyone know.  And this was done in the name of the people...vox populii.

So, we don't know if any of the GDs, GDss or emperors or empress' are really still in their tombs :'(   The only ones for sure we know are intered is NII and retainers!

 ;D Harah!  David & Dominic, at.al

Thanks for sharing the info. and excel spreadsheet. As AlexP mentioned, some of the tombs were desecrated during the Revolution. I would like to know who is "really" buried where they are supposed to be.

AFA the inscription on GD V.A.'s Tombstone, can someone translate it or have a idea what it might say?

Photographs of the Grand Ducal Vault are not permited. Below is a photograph of Grand Duke Kyril Vladimirovich's tomb. The Grand Ducal Vault was closed to visitors at the time for an extreme renovation of the floor and foundation because of the high water table.

David

Thanks D :)  BTW from the inscription on the tomb, this looks like the tomb of GD Valdimir A? I may be wrong. Date of death
appears to be 1909? Also, last name looks like Alexandrovich instead of Vadimirovich?

News Links / French Revolution on History Channel
« on: January 16, 2005, 11:57:43 AM »
Hi all,

History Channel has a two hour segment on the French Revolution this Monday night.  I am curious on how accurate the show will be ,ie, King Louis  and Marie A. etc.

We all know that sometimes these documentries can be a long way from being historical accurate..... ;)

I  have a question about Maria and her brother Dimitri.
When they died were they cremated?  Also do you think
Lennart will be buried on Mainau?

I gather that Pr. Lennart is still alive? Also, are there any pics of him as a older man?  :)

I believe that this is for the people of Russia to decide what "crimes" did Nicholas II commit. Afterall, we as (most) Westerns are on the outside looking in. I have the same feeling about Josef Stalin. He was a butcher and mass murderer but nervertheless some Russians still view him as a hero! Led the Soviet Union to victory during the "Great Patriotic War". Not trying to compare Nicholas to Stalin but there are so many viewpoints on "crimes against the Russian people from within their country committed by their leaders thoughout their history"

We all have our opinions.  :)

I have to agree with Robert.I believe once the family left Tobolsk and arrived in Ekaterinburg their fate was sealed. It kind of makes me wonder if Lenin had tried to bring the IF to Moscow for a public trial would he have been able to.It seemed like when the Ural Soviets got ahold of the IF they were unwilling to let them go for any reason so they could dwell out the people's justice.
Maybe I'm wrong but this is just my take on it.

Basically, Lenin let the Ural Soviets "get their hands" dirty in dealing with the IF. Pass the buck!

Having Fun! / How did you become bitten by the Romanov bug
« on: November 13, 2004, 03:23:05 PM »
Hello all! Greatings from the Wolverine State!

I just looked through the threads and I have not seen a thread on how many of us became interest in the Romanovs?.

Well,  here is my peculiar story.

At the age of 13 I read a book by American journalist/radical John Reed called " Ten Days that shook the world". From that point two things happened in my life. First, I became fasinated in the Russian Revolution which I began to learn everything I could about its cause and effects in the last century.  Second, I became( at the age of 19) a Marxist/Leninist.  I had my copy of Mao Ze dong's "Red Book", Ernesto"Che" Gurvarra etc... I became a member of many leftist organizations.

In 1972, (I will never forget this) I was riding a bus home from one of my "meetings" and I noticed a book lying on the floor of the bus. It had a black HB cover. I guessed that someone might have lost the book. So, I began to read some of the chapters in this "book".  For some reason I could not put that book down. It grabbed me! The book was in relation to (at that time) the Soviet Union's history and the Revolution. So, I kept reading.  I kept the book.

Later that night, as I continued to read the book, I began to see somethings that I did not understand before or some of the things I held to be true were not true. I did not know that the person I was reading about was just doing what he was tought--handed down to him from his family.  Also, as I read further, I could not understand why he did not want to change with the times. Why?  I just wanted to find out more about this man and; why he held on so hard to outdated beliefs that eventually cost him and all those he loved their lives. So, after I finished reading that book, I wanted to learn more about this tragic figure and his family.  At that point my long held ideas and beliefs began to change gradually.

That was in 1972. There has been many changes in the world since I read that book. There is no more Soviet Union  or the "Iron Curtain".  I no longer have leftist beliefs. They were thrown into the "dust-bin of history" just like the Soviet Union in 1989.

That book I found. I still have it. It is very worn. But it is in good company with its many many Romanov friends in my library.

"Nicholas and Alexandra" by Bob Massie was the book that started it all. The Romanov "Bug" bit me in 1972.  Was it coincidence that I found that " book"? I can not say. But it is a very facinating story! :)
