The Greek Royal Family / Princess Alexandra of Greece (1870-91)
« on: January 17, 2006, 06:45:16 AM »
A thread on Grand Duchess Alexandra Georgievna (1870-91), nee Princess of Greece, eldest daughter of King Georgios I and Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna of Russia. Princess Alexandra was married to GD Pavel Alexandrovitch, youngest son of Emperor Alexnder II, in 1889. They were very happy couple but their happiness ended tragically. Alexandra died after giving a birth to her 2d child, GD Dmitry...
I am very interested in GD Alexandra - we know very little about her, moreover she was mother of GDss Maria Pavlovna-younger, my favourite character in the Imperial family.

A show of all photos of GD Alexandra I've ever seen. If somebody have more photos - you are welcome in sharing pictures with us! Any info is appreciated too! Some photos are courtesy of our Forums members – thanks!

IT's done!!Great news. Finally a Russian bio on Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna-younger. By E.Horvatova "Maria Pavlovna. A Drama of a Grand Duchess",2005, the ISBN 5-462-00322-6. The book is rather good and contains rare and never published before photos like that one with Maria and her 2d husband Prince Putjatin.

Moreover, just published in Russian as a separated edition a new translation of MP's 1st book of memoirs "Education of a Princess". The translation is different from the previous one published in 2003.

The interesing exhibiton "At the Court of the Russian Emperors" - watercolours and drawings (in pencil) of Mihaly Zichy (1827-1906) was opened 11 November at the Hermitage museum, Saint-Ptersbourg. He painted significant events at the Russain court in the second part of the 19th century.
The watercolours are the most fascinating displays!!! One can see a court-ball, a wedding of some Romanov person,a parade or other ceremony, and easily recognize some persons!!
I was particularly stunned by 2 watercolours displaying weddings  - one of Alexander III's and the other - of his daughter Xenia.

Here is the link (the site is in Russian):

I've been impressed much by the displays!!

In the "Iberian Families' (Queen Maria Cristina's thread) was mentioned Duchess Maria Antonia of Mecklenbourg-Schwerin as a possible bride for King Alfonso XIII of Spain. I posted a picture of her and Marc asked about any info on her parents. I do not have much to say but I am much interested in Maria Antonia's mother and that is why?
Duke Paul Friedrich (1852-1923) , brother of Duke Friedrich Franz III and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna-elder, married for love in 1881 Princess Marie of Windieschgraetz (right spelling?). She was his cousin (her mother  Princess Louise of Mecklenbourg-Schwerin (1824-59)). For the love of Marie  Duke Paul Friedrich changed his religion to Catholicism and renounced the rights to the Duchy of Mecklenbourg for  himself and his children. The couple had 5 children:

Paul Friedrich (1882-1904),died unmarried
Marie Louise (1883-1887)
Maria Antonia (1884-1944), died unmarried
Heinrich Borwin (1885-1942), married thrice
Joseph (1889),died in infancy

Well, I read that Marie was a light-minded woman and after a number of years of her marriage she became very frivolous. Her family was forced to lock up her in some gloomy castle somewhere in Stiria. Marie lived there in a company of a pious lady-in-waiting, who was like a watchdog. IMHO it is a very strange story. Was Marie really locked up because of her frivolity??
May be there were more important reasons...for instance she had some mental problems? May be the Grand Ducal Family of Mecklenbourg simply did not like Marie over her religion.

In addition, I can not find any picture of Marie, photo or painting...
Here is Duke Paul Friedrich, spouse of Marie

I saw many pictures of her and know that she  wrote a book of memoirs. Had anyone ever read it? Is it interesting?

And some additional info on Eulalia? Some anecdotes? I guess she was a highly independent woman.

Rulers Prior to Nicholas II / Alexander III - photo tour
« on: March 03, 2005, 08:42:04 AM »
From my 1st historical classes I have been fascinated by Alexander III as a character. As the Emperor. I read much books dedicated and related to him. It was always rather difficult to separate "a man" and "the Emperor"...But I am starting this thread just to express my vision of Alexander III with the help of the photos. The photos of himself and his family.
(I am mad about all photos of Royalties of the past... I believe that  many of you all  understand such a feeling! )

The Danish Royal Family / Christian X & Queen Alexandrine
« on: January 13, 2005, 03:35:45 AM »
I'd like to start a thread on Queen Alexandrine, spouse of King Christian X. She was the eldest daughter of GD Friedrich Franz III of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and his russian spouse GD Anastasia Michailovna.Alexandrine  was not such a charming woman as her sister Cecilie and I guess the life of Alexandrine was not so stormy as in the case with Cecilie.I know that King Christian X was rather a severe and sometimes unbearable person (I mean his treatment of Maria Fedorovna, his aunt ).How he and Alexandrine were getting on? I'd like to know any info on them (esp. on Alexandrine's youth)

And 2 my favourites pics of Alexandrine

The last pic is amazing, isn't it?  :)

Scandanavian Royal Families / Prince Carl & Princess Ingeborg's family
« on: January 08, 2005, 04:36:12 AM »
To my mind Princess Ingeborg was the prettiest among daughters of King Fredrik VIII (despite of her long and solid face). It seems her marriage was a happy one.Though at first she wasn`t even told by her parents about her engagement!
Does anyone know more on Princess Ingeborg and her life?Or have her youth pictures (at the time of engagement to Prince Karl) ?

with her youngest daughter Astrid
