Yes,it was a sad story about Marie`s youth.I read it in "Secrets of the Gotha" by G.de Diesbach and was horrified at Marie`s parents intention to kick their daughter out. >:(

Gavriil Konstantinovitch in his memoirs called constantly his elder brother Ioann as "Ioannchik" (little Ioann) - it was his pet name  :)

She was rumored to be the child of Herr Haber (?). So she faced some nasty rumors about her 'Jewish' heritage. This has never been proven though.

And it was rumoured her mother Grand Duchess Sophie of Baden had been involved in organizing the murder of unfortunate Kaspar Hauser  :(

Alexander III and Maria Fedorovna did not like Grand Duchess Olga Fedorovna as she was one of the famous taletellers of  Saint-Petersburg high society...

Svetabel, thank you for that link. To my mind, the seated image of the 'Medical Nurse' recalls that of Alix during her Red Cross work. Does anyone else see any resemblance? Or echoes of other Imperial persons in this art besides GD/St Elisaveta?

For me "Medical Nurse" has no strong resemblance to Alix.  ???But who khows what the painter kept in his mind creating the canva?

I have found an astonishing reference of Xenia Alexandrovna in “Emperor Nicholas II” by A.Bokhanov (Russian edition). The author portrays Xenia exactly like that :she looked like her charming mother, reminded Maria Fedorovna in manners and light step but the character of Xenia was quite different than her mother`s .Xenia was an envious, irritable nature, she liked to spread gossip… ???
It is the first time I found such a surprising opinion. A.Bokhanov is a famous researcher and able to access the private archives of Romanovs……He portrays Xenia`s spouse Sandro no better but this Grand Duke really was not a good nature.
Have anyone ever read  the same reference of Xenia by other authors?

Yes, it is. I wonder if her other daughter Alexandrine (Queen of Denmark) was named in honor of Sandro?

I think Queen Alexandrine of Denmark was named after Grand Duchess Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1803-92) (nee Princess of Prussia),her great-grandmother

Hi Svetabel

I hadn't heard that story about Toria yet. How awful for her.

I had been surprised too. Hmm, some sons of Grand Duke Michail Nikolaevitch and his sharp-tongued wife Olga Fedorovna were unbelievably misunderstanding and heartless from time to time.

I have recently re-read “Emperor Nicholas II” by A.Bokhanov (Russian edition) and found a sad episode in Toria`s life .In 1887 Grand Duke Michail Michailovitch, an elder brother of famous “Sandro”, visited Enland. Queen Victoria had believed in possible engagement between Michail and Toria. But the shameless Grand Duke declared to young Toria that he “did not love her” and “would not love her”  though “if it was necessary he would marry her”. Poor Toria burst in tears.
QV was shocked.
Well, in 1891 the same Grand Duke married morganatically and settled in Enland. Did he meet Toria? Unlucky princess….

The Dowager Empress, among others (including Grand Duchess Vladimir), doesn't seem to have been terribly fond of Ella.  I've read some private correspondence and memoirs in which Marie Feodorovna makes quite clear her antipathy for Ella, from the 1890s on, and then in a very pronounced way after 1910.  So I don't think that these two women probably got on very well.

Greg King

A.Bochanov in his "Romanovs" (in Russian,edition 2003)
tells (according to private correspondence) about Maria Feodorovna`s anthipathy for Ella in 1890s.Empress Maria thought that Ella had intrigued for marriage between her sister Alix and future Nicolai II.It was  khown that Maria Fedorovna did not want to see her son be engaged with a german princess
