The Hesse-Darmstadts (Hesse and by Rhine) / Re: Hessian Plane Crash 1937
« on: December 25, 2012, 10:01:36 AM »
A refreshing to my post:

I think that members of the Riedesel family had known Victoria and Irene, too.

Victoria was in Wolfsgarten many summers when Ernst-Ludwig was still living. Afterwards Victoria often accompanied by Ernst-Ludwig and Eleopnore made her trip to Irene who was still living in Hemmelmark. From their she went back to Wolfsgarten to catch Prince Philip who spent his summer vacations with Georg-Donatus and Cecile in Wolfsgarten before visiting his Mountbatten uncles or the Kerrs in Great Britain.

Irene and Heinrich had also been to Wolfsgarten in the the 1920ies, and as Prince Ludwig and Princess Margaret were in touch with Irene's  granddaughter
Barbara as well as  Sophie of Greece and her sisters and their spouses and family I assume their had been touch between both familys.

The Riedesel family is a hessian noble family. They were involved with the Hesse-Darmstadts and Hesse and by Rhiny for centuaries.

As a Baron Riedesel of Eisenbach was the major-domus of Wolfsgarten in time of Eleonore and Ernst-Ludwig I am certain that members of the Riedesel family were in touch with Prince Ludwig and Princess Margaret as well with Lord Louis Mountbatten and I also assume with Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh.

Despite that Joachim of Riedesel who died in the plane crash was a close friend of Prince Ludwig as well as Prince Georg-Donatus and Prince Cecile.
Prince Ludwig had chosen him together with Lord Mountbatten as best man. That's why he was in the plane.

BeNeLux Royalty / Re: King Albert II & Queen Paola of Belgium

It was a blessing for them, Belgium and the monarchy that they found together again. They are such a charming couple and became popular
after Albert became king so unexpected.

I remember an anecdote I have read - but I don't know whether it's true or only a newspaper hoax. It says that at an official appointment he introduced himself as the "husband of Queen Paola". to the cheering crowd.

I would like to read the article in Majesty magazine and add it to my collection about the grandducal family of Hesse.
Sad, Majesty magazine is neither sold at Frankfurt Central main station nor in the shops at the airport.

Could somebody scan it and send it via email? Visit my profile to get my email address. Thanks in advance.

There is a resemblance with her grandmother when she was a child, but I cannot help me she reminds me more of her grandfather Prince Philip
when he was in the same age.

Forum Announcements / Re: Forum Members Not Heard From in a Long While

A good idea to start an own thread for this topic, so we can make up our minds about lost forum members and speculate about them.

By the way, has anybody heard of Greenowl? Wonder what happened to her.

According to Marlene's blog "Royal Musings" Irene made a trip to China in 1898.

Does, by chance, anybody know more about it as is written in the article published by Marlene? I know from a former entry on Marlene's blog that she
made her way home via the United States and Great Britain, but I would like to know more about it.

As Irene destroyed most of her private papers does anybody know if there are letters existing she wrote to her siblings or other relatives about her trip, possibly in the Hessische Staatsarchiv in Darmstadt?

Or does Ilana Miller wrote about that trip in "The four Graces"?

Simply Royal with her Greek Key Tiara :

The tiara is now often worn by her granddaughter Margarita. Does somebody know if Queen Anne or Princess Margarita wear other jewels owned by Helen or
Queen Marie (Missy)?

Forum Announcements / Re: +Robert (Bobby) Hall

It left me shocked to hear that Robert Hall had passed away. I was fond of reading his entries in many threads as they were always very accurate and show his great knowledge on Royalty and the Romanovs especially. I also enjoyed his sharp wit and his special humor

It is always shocking to family and friends when someone passed away  so sudden. I hope he did not suffer for a long time.

My thoughts are with his partner Randy, his family and their friends.

The Greek Royal Family / Re: Prince Nicholas & Grand Duchess Helen (Elena)

I just read that Ellen disliked her sisters-in-law except Queen Sophie.
Was that only because of their "not so royal" Background? Alice von Battenberg & Marie Bonaparte...

According to Hugh Vickers' biography of Alice of Battenberg Ellen was very uppish and condescending towards Alice
when they had been young woman because Alice was not so blue-blooded.

As Eric points out in their older ages they were on very friendly terms. I think the loneliness during WWII drove them together.

Thanks Mandy for posting that glamourous picture of Ellen. With her aristocratic features she could have made career in Hollywood
in the 1920ies.

Her younger daughter Lady Pamela Hicks has written her memoirs: "Daughter of Empire: Life as a Mountbatten".

There's an interview with her published in the telegraph where she talks about her relationship with her mother:
