Absolutely correct.  I always wondered what the issue was... little Nicky and big one???  Or, the fact that they saw each other maybe twice or three times a year... seems little room for confusion to me, but then, I wasn't there:)!

I've often wondered this too, I mean there was quite a few Victoria's in the family and a couple of Alexandra/Alix's too. Would it do any harm to have another Nicholas? But like you said Ilana, we weren't there, so it may remain a mystery! :)

It wouldn't have done any harm for Nicholas was one of Lord Mountbatten's christian names.

According to "Louis and Victoria" by Richard Hough Lord Mountbatten "was given  the names Albert Victor Nicholas  Louis Francis. None of these would do for everyday use and a nickname had to be found. Victoria  suggested Nicky, but the children pointed out that this would certainly lead to confusion  with the Tsar, and they did not like it anyway, and wasn't Dickie a nicer name. So Dickie it was, a name she sometimes called Louis in private." (p. 200).

Clip of Prince Ludwig and Princess Margaret with the children of Philipp and Mafalda von Hessen~
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM3xfANLQug&feature=channel_page

Thanks for posting the link. It was also posted in another thread.

Thanks for posting the short video. It's well done.

The video pays tribute to Princess Margaret of Hesse (Peg) (1913-1997), born Margaret Campbell-Geddes, the wife of Prince Louis of Hesse (Lu) (1908-1968). THey were seen in the beginning of the video together with another woman and 4 children. She is the woman walking the dog. The other one looks like Sophie of Greece (Tiny) (1914-2001), the fourth and youngest daughter of Andrew of Greece and Alice of Battenberg.

According to the title the children should be the four children of Mafalda of Savoy and Philipp of Hesse: Moritz (b. 1926), Heinrich (1927-1999), Otto (1937-1998 ) and and their sister Elizabeth (B.1940).

For the children shown in the video are very close in age and were accompanied by Sophie I guess it's Otto and Elizabeth together with their cousins Carl (b. 1937) and Rainer (b. 1939), Sophie's two boys from her first marriage.

Does anyone know who the lady next to Cecile is? One of her sisters?

The lady does look like Theodora, Cecile's sister. But I am not sure as the picture is blurry.

I was thinking it looked like Maria of Savoy (daughter of VEIII).

The lady looks very familiar. She reminds me of Mafalda of Savoy, the wife of Philip of Hesse, but I am not sure.

Don;t know if there are more booksin German on Ella.

I only know of one book about her in german. It's "Großfürstin  Elisabeth von Rußland" by Lubov Millar, ISBN 3-935217-15-3, published in 2004.

i belive it is good so heheh

but i belive Louis knew if his daugthers became their period or ??  Sure VHM knew it, she told them what they should do if they should  and shoulnt do if they are older.

Nicky knew about the periods of his daugthers, Alix wrote it to him...

This goes really far beyond any bios! Nevertheless I would like to know the source for Alix writing to Nicky about their daughters' period.

Did she become friends with Ella again after the latter converted?

As far as I know Ella converted in1891. Lubov Millar wrote in her book about Ella that neither her father nor her siblings understood why she converted. She was only comforted by her sister Victoria who besides her grandmother Queen Victoria encouraged her.

In the book it is not mentioned that they did not be friends any longer after her convertion.

In the book there are pictures that were made in 1908 at Illinskoje and at Ella's hospital in her convent in Moscow. They show Ella and Irene together. There are also pictures included from a family union in 1913 at Hemmelsmark.
Judging from that pictures I think they were as close as in their childhood and youth.

I am more interested in the music that went with the clip. Any info on that ?

It's by the Viennese composer Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) who was know even in his life-time as "the waltz king". He's the composer of the famous operetta "Die Fledermaus" and of such famous waltzes as "The Blue Danube", "Emporer Waltz", "Tales of the Vienna Woods", "Voices of Spring" and many others. He also wrote a lot of polkas and operettas.

The music that went with the clip is a part of the introduction of "Emporer Waltz".

For those interested a small movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygZziSCiHYc

By the way. I've seen this video a couple of times. But behind the Tsar walks 3 women. Are these women not the Grand Duchess Maria P. sr. and Grand Duchess Anastasia M and Queen Olga of Greece?

(Behdind GD Ella, Xenia and Cyrill I also see GD Anastasia and behind GD Cyrill is that not Andrew or Boris????)

Thanks for posting the link to the movie.

I am not quite sure about the three women but the woman who comes first into the picture looks like the tsar's aunt Maria Alexandrowna Duchess of Coburg.
The woman in the middle with the white umbrella I do not know.
The third one is Grandduchess Maria Pavlova Sr.

Does anybody know at which occasion that little movie was made?

Thanks for posting the lovely pictures of Marie, Grand Duchess Ally. I like the second one very much.

Seeing the pictures of the young Marie I ask myself whether she had other suitors apart from her future husband?

Gabriella.

Not that much was known about her. Most certainly her "high education". VMH did not seem to be an intellectual like her Aunt Vicky (who even read Karl Marx).

She was known for her chainsmoking and her non-stop talking. However Alice of Athlone was known to be the story-teller of the family. She told Prince Charles & the Queen interesting stories about Queen Victoria. I hope they were able to pass that down to William, Harry and the York Girls...

Very strange that there should not been much information about VMH. As Marlene points there are some books that dealed with her and her family.

If you read for example Richard Hough's book "Louis and Victoria - The First Mountbattens" or Hugh Vickers bio of her daughter Alice you would discover that she was a well-educated woman who was interested in a lot of subjects and had a bright not just a shallow knowledge on those.

103
VHM didnt liked her aunty vicky ?? really ??

i know that Irene was close to aunty vicky
ella was close to aunty alix(wife from Edward VI)

Hope it's a typo that Aunty Alix should have been the wife of Edward VI (1537-1553), son of Henry VIII...

Thanks for posting the picture of little Elizabeth. It's  is a very nice one. I had not seen it afore. Does anybody know when it was made?

I agree with all of you that had she grown up she would have resembled her mother. But I think she also would have resembled her aunt Ella. There*s something in the way little Elizabeth looks that reminds me of her.

Indeed maybe an Austrian marriage ?

I doubt that an Austrian marriage was considered for Prince Wilhelm of Hesse or his brother Heinrich (1838-1900) who also served in the Hessian and Prussian army.
Both were Protestants while the Habsburgs were Catholics. Despite the fact that their uncle Ludwig III. (1806-1877) as a Protestant married the Catholic Bavarian Princess Mathilde (1813-1862), also an aunt of Ludwig II of Bavaria, marriages between Catholics and Protestants were very uncommon in former times.
