Forum Announcements / Re: System Administrator Appreciation Day
« on: July 30, 2004, 10:27:47 AM »
Rob and Bob,
"Appreciation" just doesn't say it.  I can't state too LOUDLY how awesome you guys are and what a great job you are doing as a labor of love.  We do APPRECIATE you and wish there was a better way to show it.  Every time I post or when I see a new picture, or learn something new (as I do everytime I log in), I am grateful that you are there and making this network of Romanov lovers possible.
Thanks again.
Bob G.

Yes the rooms are there, but they are shown as they were decorated for Nicholas I and Marie Feodorovna.  They are much more ornate than the photos I have seen of Nicholas II and Alexandra's time.  The biggest change is the Marie's Wintergarden which was eliminated in the later renovations.

Joanna,
Thanks for the detail on the AP. I'm still hoping for locations of Alexander and Marie's rooms in the right wing.
I have the Winter Palace watercolor book.  It is delightful.

Joanna,
I too, am interested in the right wing of the AP.  See my posts under the Alexander Palace.  I'm hoping we'll get someone to identify the right wing rooms.
Do you think the classrooms were on the 2nd floor of the right wing as OTMA and Alexei's were on the 2nd floor of the left wing?
I've been trying to locate Ducamp's books for some time. Very hard to locate!

Does anyone know where on the floorplan were the Bedroom of Marie, the Crimsom Reception Room, the Study of Alexander III and the Stag Room. What are there numbers???

There hasn't been any response to this request, and I too would love to get a better sense of exactly where these rooms are located.  The State Museum 'Tzarskoje Selo'  has a numbered floorplan of the entire Alexander Palace and it would be great if one of the palace historians could identify where these rooms are on the plan.  Thanks so much.

I just got a large number of pictures from 1936 of the English Palace along with the plans - I will try and put them up on the site in the next two weeks.

Palaces in St. Petersburg / Re: Palace of GD Alexei Aleksandrovitch

There is a wonderful engraving of Aleksei's Palace from the 1880's on the Fabergearts web site.  I tried to copy it as I have seen other pictures on the discussion board, but couldn't seem to do it, so here is the web site.  Maybe the administrator can post the engraving for all to see.

Sergei and Ella were also allowed by the Tsar to use the Neskuchny Sad (The Alexandra Palace) which is now the Academy of Sciences.  It is just south of Gorky Park and had large gardens surrounding it.  I don't believe the palace or the gardens are open to the public.  Once Sergei was given the right to live here, Muscovites were no longer able to visit the gardens.  Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna mentions the palace in her autobiography "The Education of a Princess".  When radicals made it dangerous, Sergei and Ella moved back to the Kremlin.  Its a pretty little palace.  I have a picture of it on a collection of Moscow Palaces.

Tsarskoe Selo Palaces / The Lower Dacha (New Palace), at Peterhof
« on: January 25, 2004, 01:29:43 PM »
Does anyone have any pictures of the "New" or "Lower" Palace at Peterhof?  It was the palace Nicholas and Alexander used when at Peterhof and was destroyed by the Soviets in the 50's.  I have been unable to find anything about the palace in any books or on the internet.  Any help would be appreciated. :D

The movie "Nicholas and Alexandra" did an excellent job of presenting the Massie's book of the same title.  It was well done, and captured the lives of the last of the Romanovs really well.  Its a fascinating view and and beautifully acted movie.

I really liked "Romanov Autumn" by Charlotte Zeepvat.  It really gave a lot of detail I had never seen anywhere eles
