Maria Nicholaievna / Re: Maria's letters & notes

I really enjoyed reading these again.   We're lucky to have access to so many of the IF's letters.   They make them seem so much more alive and down to earth than just reading biographies.   Thanks Inok!   Good to see you posting here again.

Seriously, why do these books keep coming out?  How gullible do these authors think people are?

Maybe I'm the gullible one here, but I think there are quite a number of people "out there" who are not the least bit interested in serious literature of any sort.   The same ones who buy dime store romances (or maybe the ones who are hooked on the Kardashians) would be taken in by this.   They probably have no idea who or what the Romanovs were and have no interest in pursuing the subject.   They're just looking for entertainment.     I have no idea what costs are involved with having a book published, but isn't just possible the author is banking on enough of these types to buy his garbage to make a quick, tidy profit.

This Rasputin autograph on the back of the icon, which he presented to the royal family. I can not read because the video I can see half of the words.
Thanks for trying!

Liliana, you always have such wonderful treasures to post here.     Would you please translate what was written on the wall in frame 49 of the video.   Thank you!

The Alexander Palace / Re: Kitchen Building

Interesting observation Brassov. Not being an architect, I had thought the right side was conveyor belt to transport the food containers to the palace - more for use for large dinners, etc. I couldn't figure out use for the left side though. It would be great if someone can understand the drawing.

Joanna

I  know it's been over a year since Joanna posted this but I've just re-read this thread.  After looking at the drawings of the tunnel, I agree with Joanna that there was some sort of conveyor on one side to transport meals, supplies, etc., but my thoughts on why the tunnel was squared off with panels or straight walls is that it was probably a simple way to insulate the tunnel somewhat  from moisture.   I wonder what the ceiling was covered with.   The drawing shows some type of paneling, but hard to tell from an draftsman's rendering.

Thanks for posting the video.  It's exciting to view these areas that have been virtually untouched for so many years.  However, this is confusing to me.   If Bob always knew about their location, why was this a surprising revelation to the workers.   And as EmmyLee mentioned, I thought we were always aware of the tunnel connecting the kitchens to the AP.  Is this a different tunnel they are talking about?

They saved the best for last...new christening photo!!! And, it's a beauty!

It's precious, isn't it?   I would love to see some of the personal family photos they've taken of the little prince.   Maybe someday.

He was a cute little chubster--those cheeks! I loved how William was bouncing George's arm up and down--a gesture most parents can recognize. LOL George looked adorably grumpy and kind of over it but did his first royal duty like a trouper. :)
My first thought  when I saw William bouncing the little one was "Careful, William, that cutie-pie is going spit up all over that beautiful christening gown."  Luckily that didn't happen.   What a beautiful child - what a gorgeous little family - William, Kate and little George.

The Final Chapter / Re: Ipatiev House destruction pictures

There something I can't identify between the windows near the ceiling in this photo....any ideas? Thank you
To me it looks like a floor-to-ceiling mirror with a very ornate frame at the top.   Could that be some sort of banner protruding from near the top at a 90 deg. angle?

Thank you for the heads up on Taina Tsarskikh Ostankov. I do have this book, and found a few more photos that V. Borisov took.
(sorry for the quality, I didn't scan these, just grabbed shots with my camera. Click for bigger images:)

Woody3697> I agree with you. I am surprised there are not more shots taken after 1919 to 1975. Although the ones you have shared are all new to me, including the one of Yurovsky.  Great shots! Do you have them in a high resolution too? Thank you for the account! Very interesting. That's the first time I've read that kind of detail.

I've seen that photo of the door before.  Seems to me that there was a caption with it stating that this was part of the door at the rear of the murder room where OTMA were standing.  I seem to remember that there are several bullet holes in this door.   Is my memory deceiving me.   Can someone verify this?

I do confess that I am surprised that the citizens of Sverdlovsk / Ekaterinburg were not aware of the history of the place.

I was surprised at this also, however, given the repressive conditions in Soviet Russia, it may be that local folks avoided any discussion about the history of the house for fear of recrimination.   Wasn't it considered taboo to keep memories of the Imperial family alive at the time?   I'm not sure if the same psychology applies here, but consider all the German people who lived and worked in vicinity of concentration camps during WWII who claimed after the fact that they did not know what was happening in their own backyards.

Nicholas II / Re: Re: Photos of Nicholas II #5

Mapuche - Thanks for posting that second photo, even though it is not of NII.   I needed a good laugh on this Monday morning and that did the trick for me.

Congratulations to Kate and William!  Welcome to the world little "Baby Boy Cambridge"!   I'm so happy for the Royal Family and Great Britain, although I do have to admit I was also a tinge dissappointed it wasn't a little girl.

I've just read reports that the Duke and Duchess abruptly left the Middleton family home this afternoon bound for London.  No news yet on whether they are returning to Kensington Palace, or heading directly to hospital.  Fingers crossed - this might be the start.

I was so excited when I read your post I immediately began checking the news channels and online reports to see if anything was being mentioned about the incident.   All I found was this report of the local firefighters near Bucklebury responding to a call from the Middleton home this afternoon to rescue one of Kate's dogs that got it's head caught in a gate.   Seems all is well now - the pup is fine  and  . . .  no baby yet! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/kate-middleton/10191968/Firefighters-rush-to-rescue-pet-dog-at-Duchess-of-Cambridges-home.html

The Windsors / Re: Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh Part II
« on: June 11, 2013, 10:57:08 PM »
I'd like to add my well-wishes for Prince Phillip as well.  I have to be honest - before I joined this forum I did not have a high regard for him.  After reading the many posts about him here my opinion has changed and I now recognize his incredible service to his country and support he has provided the Queen and  his family through the years.
