Isn't the rose the most beloved flower in England?  Pehaps that was the reason for the name.   Is there some sort of rule that says those in the line of succession be named after previous monarchs?

Would like to add my delight and best wishes to the Royal Couple and congratulations to all of Great Britain    How exciting!  That'll be one good-looking child.

YKYOWTRW- Going into surgery and thinking if the IF survived even after their faces were bashed and having broken bones in the face.  This is what it feels like.

I'm off to be having lower jaw surgery on Thursday.  Where my lower jaw is going to be moved forward so I have a bite :)  It envolves having my lower jaw broken and postioned so the break is held in place with a titanium while the bones heal.  I'm looking forward to it when I heal but not looking forward to the procedure.

Best of luck to you rosieposie!   Here's wishing  for an easy and speedy recovery for you!

The Alexander Palace / Re: Pictures of the Interiors as they were

It's quite moving to see these photos of the interiors is so much disrepair.   Thank you lilianna!

I'm ancient.   Maybe the History Channel would be interested in my life story.  It wouldn't be much worse than most of the programming on tv nowadays.

I was an aunt at 12!   She (my niece) is now one of my best friends and usual travel companion.  We have a lot in common as far as interests go, but I can't seem to get her interested in the Romanov's.   She's one of those, and we all know them, who's eyes glaze over when I talk about them.  But she'd travel with me to Russian in a heartbeat.  If only she would win the lottery and treat me to a trip.

AP - no doubt they are very uncomfortable!   But I just love the style of it.   In my mind, antiques are to be looked at, not used.

edubs!  Thank you for your search.   I think I like the first  one (the single mahogany window seat) even better than the "Romanov" one in the picture.   That's a real beauty.     My birthday is Dec. 6, so if anyone would like to celebrate Nicholas II's name day in  a special way, I'd gladly accept a gift of the mahogany window seat!   (I won't hold my breath waiting).  I'd have to take out a second mortgage to buy it for myself and right now retirement is higher on my list of priorities than a pretty stool.

I really like that chair.  It's one antique piece I would not mind owning.

Consider the broad difference in meaning between the English word "toilet" and the French word "toilette", the first being the receptacle for (you know) and the second meaning the act of washing oneself.   Then there's the sweet smelling "eau de toilette" which, strictly translated is "water of toilet".   Oh, thank heavens I was born into an English speaking family.   What a nightmare for those learning English as a second language.   You have my sincere admiration!

From reply 262

Those kokoshniki (last in the series of links in the middle of your post) of the Grand Duchesses are so touching and sad; just the color I'd imagined them. I guess they could have belonged to any of OTMA. I'm so glad they were saved, though it's rather heartbreaking to look at them.
All your photos are great and many thanks for making them available.

I had the same reaction when I saw them.

Many years ago I worked with a guy who had a Polish last name - lots of c's, z's, y's, w's with a slight sprinkling of vowels.  No one could pronounce his name so we affectionately called him "John Alphabet".

Arthur N David records that when he first treated him the Kaiser's teeth needed quite a lot of work, but he was subsequently a regular visitor to his surgery - about 100 times in 12 years, which averages out at once every six weeks. Davis, however, says very little about the actual treatment (patient confidentiality).

Does anyone know if they had dental floss or the like back then?   I doubt they realized back then the importance of flossing, so it could be that those visits at six-week intervals were for mainly a good cleaning.   Yilk!  What a conversation to be having while I'm eating my lunch!

88
That must be something that all dentists worldwide are trained to do in Dental School - ask their patients questions while their mouths are otherwise engaged.

Ann, funny story!  The Kaiser and his ADC's would never get away with that these days.  They'd each be billed for the entire day under the billing code for "Consultation".

RomaFan96- For pronunciation of Tsarskoe Selo, see FA's post #143 for detailed explanation.   It would probably be very helpful for you to read through this entire thread.  We all have trouble pronouncing a lot of the Russian words and most of them have already been discussed here.
