It always strikes me in that series how similar the girls look. I think it's how round their eyes are but they look so much like the beautiful sisters they are where as in other photos I sometimes struggle seeing resemblances.

It's a beautiful colourisation, do you know whose it is? It reminds me of staella on deviantart.

The Duke does so well for his age. Maybe these regular admittances have something to do with what a stressful year it has been for the royal couple what with the Jubilee and then the Olympics. Wishing him all the best.

GrandDuchessIsabelle, this is an issue I'm dealing with right now myself, the whites of the eyes ...your  work is wonderful but the "whites of the eyes"  are too white (just imo =) We say, " whites of the eyes"  buy really they aren't white at all. This is particularly true in these photos  because the girls  faces are in the "whites" become even darker as it were. What one can do for a face in shadow is have the "whites" slightly lighter  than the  the face ,  with a lighter still gleam at the highest point of the eye ball.  That also gives it a 3_D effect .

Other wise they are great and I hope you don't mind my comment.

I completely understand this and will freely admit that I have been struggling with perfecting eyes for quite some time. Thank you for the tip and I will try and put it into practice!

BlessOTMA (or Anne, if I may?) wonderful finds! I simply have to colour them! And Vanya,I utterly agree. Anastasia of all the girls resembled Alix from her childhood to early teens. I think it is a huge shame that we never saw if she turned out to be the great beauty Alix was. The cruel twists of fate...

Read this recently and thoroughly enjoyed it, very well written. One thing I noticed through was how Anya Vyrubova was portrayed. I had always thought of her as a puppy: affectionate, loving and selfless but this books seemed to show her as the opposite: manipulative, demanding and sullen. Did I miss something or have I just been very blind?

For Alexei, I'd go for 11ish, but an eleven year old who could be mature enough to act older than he was. Same with the girls, but for more respectable ages. For example, Maria at 18/17 and Anastasia 15/16. For the older girls, I don't think it would matter so much but make up and hair would have to be considered carefully (as well as clothes etc.)

On tumblr I saw Jennifer Lawrence suggested for Maria, but I think she has more of a resemblance to Olga.

I believe Ortipo is referring to this picture: Taken in Finland, I think, around 1911.

Coming back to this topic, I recently saw a post on tumblr suggesting Isabelle Fuhrman for the role of Tatiana. I was a little un-nerved by this, not because I dislike her (on the contrary, you'd be hard pushed to find a bigger supporter) but because she only turned 15 this year. In a few years I think she'd be up to this role, particually because of her Russian heritage but not now. Opinions?

Returning to the forum with a new YKYOWTR when... You mutter 'Imperial' under your breath every time your history teacher says 'Russian Royal family'. The boy next to me has moved seats now, oops.

Small but perfectly formed, I would say. It's amazing that even 100 years later these pictures still mean so much to us.
