Imperial Russian History / Re: College Courses on Imperial Russian History
« on: February 20, 2009, 10:57:15 PM »
I took History 327 which is Imperial Russian History from Athabasca University a couple of years ago.  I quite enjoyed it though the text book was only so so.  But for a distance learning course it was pretty good.

The Windsors / Re: Kate Middleton

One really can't help but feel sorry for Kate.  I can't imagine what it must be like to have a rabid entourage following after you all the time.

I was reading some article the other day on her and it mentioned that many people criticize her for not appearing to have a " real job".  I can only imagine that it would be hard for a young lady in her position to convince an employer that the rabid mob wouldn't interfere with the place of business.  I recognize she is employed as a clothing buyer.

The horrendous pressure that must be on the two of them right now knowing that people are betting on a wedding date must be terrible to bear.

I love this book.  I received it as a gift many years ago and it started my history obsession.

I would buy it but sadly it would be when it it the second hand shop.  Unless one of my sisters in law were buying it for a present.

I don't know, Harry's ears just scream "Prince Charles" to me.  Not that ears are reliable indicators.

Books about the Romanovs and Imperial Russia / Re: Duplicate Books

What a great thread!!   I have just moved and am in the process of unpacking my books.  If I see any duplicates I'll be sure to post them!

Hi Helen,

That's exactly the bit I am talking about.   I am kind of like a magpie, distracted by the minutiae.

I am just curious, but would the laneway always have been paved in some fashion? Towards the end of the video it seemed like there were some wheel tracks leading up towards the palace past where the pavement ended and it made me think of how the drive would have looked originally.

The Alexander Palace / Re: New Movie of Alexandra's bedroom

It certainly looks like it must be a real room and not a set/stage.   The draperies are wrong but with the large amount of personal items, i agree it must have been shot in the AP.

Thank you so much for the translations!   The time you must be spending to do this must be immense!

The Final Chapter / Re: Change of history

I am not entirely convinced that the murders of the IF, Ella and others were connected in a planned way.  My theory is that they were all individual situations that got out of hand when way too many people who had way too much to drink started shooting their mouths off and then ended up doing something because they couldn't not do what they said and save face.

I think that tensions and emotions were running high and the Ural Soviet did their thing because it seemed like a good idea.  Then the persons responsible for Ella and co. did their thing; not because of some prime directive from Lenin but more of a ten thousand monkeys at ten thousand typewriters sort of thing happened.

Forum Announcements / Re: Why do we have "user names"?
« on: October 25, 2005, 11:59:23 PM »
My name is plain old Nicole.  My screen name is Nicole reversed.  I am not too bothered about my real name on the internet as I feel pretty secure about identity and my computer being safe as long as I follow the network rules my husband has set forth to follow. (More like laws really, that's what I get for marrying a systems administrator).

I like screen names they free a person from living up to the name they have.   Or at least allows a fantasy of having a different name.

Thank you for the breath taking photos!  They are wonderful.

The part that tugs my strings is seeing the graffiti on the wall.
