I have a couple to add...

The Summer Day is Done  by RT Stevens... very sweet, chaste love story with Olga ... appearances by the entire family, which comprise the major part of the novel and Livadia as almost a halcyon dream.  The family as we like thinking of them....

Time After Time by Allen Appel -- appearance and escape of family in a sci-fi time travel novel, lots of fun.

I was lucky enough to be guided around Wolfsgarten by Moritz von Hessen, and saw that lovely playhouse.  It is very sweet, as, frankly, is the entire house and property.  One of the senses one gets in walking around Darmstadt is that they really loved little Elizabeth, and were truly devastated at her death.  Her memorial in one of the Palais parks (can't remember the name) is completely poignant... it gives you a feeling that it happened just yesterday.

And, there is still resentment of Ducky!

Speaking of Grace Kelly, I remember seeing a documentary about Georges Balanchine.  He spoke about meeting the Empress as a child and said that her demeanor reminded him of Grace Kelly.  I thought it was an interesting comment.

His book on the Battenbergs was just awful, esp. the things he said about Victoria and Louis Battenberg.  From everything I have read, they had an extremely compatible marriage.  His assessment was different.

I have asked people who might know what Lambton's problem with the Hessians and the Battenbergs, especially, but no one seems to know.

I haven't heard anything like this, and I wonder if you would be able to find evidence of this at the archives in Darmstadt -- or whether Dr Franz would be willing to show this to you.  If such evidence exists, I am not sure how easy it would be for you to see it.

The Hesse-Darmstadts (Hesse and by Rhine) / Re: Grand Duke Ludwig IV

The impressions that I have of GD Ludwig, was that he was always out riding and shooting -- leaving Victoria to deal with the child and to basically raise them herself with the help of both grandmothers.

Has anyone read this book?

It's a novel about the two Hessian sisters and their Russian marriages, and it's extremely anti-Hessian.  Lambton definitely had an axe to grind -- can't quite figure out if it was because he was related to a Naval figure in England who hated Prince Louis Battenberg, or because his Aunt was supposedly blinded for all the reading she did as lady-in-waiting to Princess Beatrice, but whatever it is, this book is absolutely grotesque.

What do you think??

Books about the Romanovs and Imperial Russia / Re: A Few Questions
« on: March 21, 2004, 05:18:18 PM »
Just to answer some of your question #3.  I've seen "Ernie's" biography in Darmstadt, but know of no plans (unfortunately!!!) to translate it into English.  Publishers seem very reluctant to do translations.  A friend wrote a biography of Queen Sophia of Spain and was unsuccessful getting it translated and published in English.

Yes, in 1942, Victoria Milford Haven wrote (with the help of Sophie Buxhoveden) her Memoirs.  They remain unpublished.

I have great respect for the person who pretty much puts Royalty Digest together.... Charlotte Zeepvat.  I recommend it highly.

Some years ago I saw the ballet ANASTASIA in London, done by the ROyal Ballet.  I thought it was dreadful, and I was particularly disappointed because I love Frederick Ashton's choreography... he did the ROMEO AND JULIET that many are familiar with.

The first act takes place on the Standart with the girls just flitting away with the officers on board.

The second act takes place in an insane asylum.

Nothing much happens either way....  ???

First Post!!!!
