Having Fun! / Re: Favorite Scores (film)
« on: September 24, 2005, 08:27:27 PM »
We're talking about scores LOL not songs.

I'd love to add Craig Armstrong's "Ray" to my list.

Craig Armstrong (not Greg) did Love Actually.

Didn't Jerry Goldsmith do Legend? I heard that is a very rare score.

The Piano by Michael Nyman is definitely a score :)

Apollo 13 is such an uplifting, yet sad score. Fitting for its subject matter. I love hearing both the dialogue and non-dialogue versions. The dialogue reminds me of the movie, and the nondialogue reminds me of the glory of the music.

As you can see Horner is one of my favorite composers.

Looking at my list I don't think I have anything from Debney or Newton Howard on there. *stare*

Cutthroat Island by John Debney (his best, and the standard for all pirate scores to follow, few of which matched it)
SeaQuest DSV by John Debney
The Passion by John Debney
The Village by James Newton Howard
Treasure Planet by James Newton Howard
Atlantis: The Lost Empire by James Newton Howard
The Sixth Sense by James Newton Howard

Ironically enough I have not heard his best, which is Dinosaur.

Road To Perdition by Thomas Newman
Little Women by Thomas Newman
Meet Joe Black by Thomas Newman
Finding Nemo by Thomas Newman
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events by Thomas Newman
Finding Neverland (can't spell the composer's name offhand)
Batman by Danny Elfman
Edward Scissorhands by Danny Elfman
Good Will Hunting by Danny Elfman
Ice Age by David Newman (his second best next to Anastasia)

That's all I can think of for now!

Oh, Dracula (1931) by Phillip Glass.

And I find I didn't list LOTR or Harry Potter series either! Good grief. Those are my favorites too.

For me, the movie isn't that annoying. I suppose because I'm a soundtrack fan, and this is one of Menken's best scores, behind Beauty and the Beast (#2) and Hunchback of Notre Dame (#1). It is more sophisticated than The Little Mermaid and seems to be less stereotypical than Aladdin (note I am only talking about the SCORE here, not necessarily the movie itself). The script overall is well-written with beautiful themes woven into it. I suppose I stand by it also as a skating fan, and Gordeeva and Grinkov's last television appearance before his death was skating to this music in a theatrical tale. Of course, when it was actually performed I don't know, because I have a tape of them on November 12, 1995, exactly 8 days before Sergei's death.

Watching them skate to the instrumental If I Never Knew You brought such tears from my eyes. That song really fits them both.

I made a wallpaper a few weeks ago commemmorating the tenth anniversary of his death. I plan on using it as a background for a desktop theme.

LOL I wanted to bring in a film the class could identify with, a film they knew. They knew it immediately.

Being in a small town I didn't have access to either of those films LOL. Besides they still would have said the same thing, that it was fiction. They think all things in movies are fiction.

Strange, my niece knows Pocahontas was real, knows the real story, adores the film, but I guess that's cause she's 14.

Ah, I remember when that movie came out, she loved it before she even saw it. I even got her a costume with the dress and necklace and armbands. She wanted to wear it home! Ah, memories of a more innocent Ashley. *sigh* Before she got a fake tattoo of a Playboy bunny (which her mom LOVED, seriously).

Nice that I'm not the only one in listing Nessun Dorma! *swoon*

Isn't it just gorgeous? Have you seen anyone skate to it? (it's one of the most overused pieces lol but I never get tired of it)

And I love Sting's Fields of Gold. Notice how sometimes the only person who sings a particular song right is the one who actually wrote it?

We had to do a speech for Communications class on a noteable person. I chose Anastasia. We had to, if possible, dress like the person, and talk in first-person, as if we actually were the person, then the class had to guess who we were.

It was quite hilarious. To allude everyone, I used "family business" instead of monarchy. I wore a long dress with pearls and my hair in a bun.

No one had any clue who I was. Then I brought in the animated movie. Then they said I should have gotten an F for choosing a fictional person! A FICTIONAL PERSON?! I said She's not fictional, and I have photos to prove it! They still didn't believe me! I got an A though LOL.

I was telling my sister (who by the way is 10 years older than me) about The Nutcracker.

She says Oh, I saw that! Mickey Mouse was in it! And Pinocchio!

LOL I just saw this thread. I have one.

My sister and I were talking, and I said I wanted to see Carmen.

She replied Carmen Elektra?

Download this montage I made. It uses the song, as well as Gabriel Yared's superior rejected score for Troy.

http://savefile.com/projects.php?pid=870542

There are three montages here. Download the one on Alexander Abt to hear the song. You're welcome to check out the other montages too.

I have another one coming LOL but I am lazy ;D I haven't gotten around to making necessary adjustments to it for it to be satisfactory to my taste.

The End Credits song LOL.

Quick thought...

Horner is a gifted composer, but this score needed some work. Of course what can one expect for something that was created in six weeks, but still. I've heard scores composed in less time that are brilliant (Interview With The Vampire rightfully earned an Oscar nomination and was composed in 1-2 weeks).
