Oh, the WC is on the main floor? A corner of the room was bricked over then? I'm surprised they didn't break into that earlier, if so.

I understood the information to be that there were two separate sections cemented over in the basement: one is the tunnel to the kitchens and the second is a bathroom connected to Nicholas' apartments. So not stairs leading from his apartments to the kitchens.

This is really interesting, but I thought they had already been working on the tunnel leading from the kitchens in recent years. I'm curious which room the stairs come down from-- the new study maybe? Or Nicholas' bathroom (if it didn't already have a toilet in it)?

Yes, you're right. I can't read Russian, but I assume that the largest print on the picture is a watermark. What does it say up on top? Is that where it's labeled wrong?

Interesting to have differing opinions on the photo I posted. Thanks for your input, FA and Joanna. I agree that the furniture seems more fitted to a hunting lodge than the Catherine Palace, at least the furniture I've seen from the palace.

I discovered that there is, apparently, an Alexander Palace Wiki. It had three photos I don't believe I've seen before. The first is of the mezzanine in the Maple Room.

I got this better scan of the Mauve Room and could make out the titles of three of the books in the upper right corner on the bookshelf (my scanner didn't get the third). They all say Baby's Souvenir, so I'm thinking they're probably baby books! How fun would it be to look through those? I wonder if there were two more just not visible on the bookshelf.
