The Hohenzollern / Sophie of Liegnitz(1525-1546)
« on: July 26, 2007, 12:31:02 PM »
Sophie of Liegnitz(1525-1546) , first wife of Elector Johann Georg of Brandenburg (1525-98) seems to have died shortly after the birth of her only son, who is the ancestor of all the Brandenburg Hohenzollerns. She is therefore their ancestress as well. I have searched high and low and can find very little info on her. Does anybody have any info and is there a portrait of her anywhere?

This is undoubtedly the same woman as the portrait. She is Amalie (1834-1905) married to Adalbert of Bavaria (1828-1875).
Here they are depicted together and the features are unmistakable :)

In another part of this forum this picture was presented as the wife of King Johann of Saxony. So that's Amalie (1801-1877)
I have seen a shetch of her in which the features look very similar. I'll try to locate it.

Wonderful portraits :)
Where is the Allan Ramsay portrait to be found?

Thankyou for the pictures! Unfortunately I think the first picture, depicting a couple, is of her brother (another Karl) and his wife. The other picture seems more likely but is also on some websites which say it is also a brother and sometimes they say it is her father. Can anybody authenticate one way or the other :-/

The Windsors / King George III, his Queen Charlotte and their family
« on: April 30, 2006, 05:14:38 PM »
I have never seen pictures of Queen Charlotte's parents. I Know that the palace at Neustrelitz was a casualty of WW2. Does this mean that the family portraits were destroyed? There is in the British Royal Collection a snuffbox with Charlotte and her siblings depicted on the outside. Apparently her parents are depicted on the inside. Does anyone have any pictures of her parents?

The Danneskiold-Sams√łe who appear more than once in Dona's family tree were not so much petty aristocracy as an illegitimate line of the Oldenburg Kings of Denmark. More info and pictures of the are to be found at the following site

I also have a much cherished and well-thumbed copy. I was disappointed that it didn't list his known paintings let alone illustrate them. Does anyone know if any attempt has been made to make a definitive list ???

The Tudors / Elisabeth of Bohemia

I know she was born a Stuart in Scotland but I think this belongs with the Wittelsbach family! I came accross the following painting by Honthorst in a book printed in 1938. It was then in the palace of Herrenhausen which suffered in the war. Does anybody know if it survived or if there is a better version of the photo?

It shows Elisabeth with all her family and a portrait of her husband.
