I'm not convinced that Tatiana is the one portrayed wearing the sailor cap, it is more to the likeness of Olga. However, the feathery hat that is supposedly Tatiana doesn't resemble her much either. But of course, it wouldn't make sense to not have a portrait of Tatiana when all the girls have one made. It would be nice to have the original picture taken of the girls to compare with the portraits.

Is this the same palace that Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna would bring her imperial nieces every Saturday?

Nicholas II / Re: Expllanation of line in NII diary

Thank you for the replies. It's great to learn what words mean in the royal diary entries that are not commonly known today.

I even came across "eighteen-place char-a-banc" on the young NII diary entry. I had a hard time looking for an example but finally found one abeit the pic was kind of small.

There was an entry on which NII was insulted because he wasn't included with the Darmsdatds for a char-a-banc ride. :) He stated that felt insulted.

Thank you for the prompt reply DNAgenie!!! :)

Now I know what to look for. So the emperor AIII was actually reining the horses? What an amusing scene.

Since I don't want to start a new thread about a question I have about NII's diary entry during his youth, I'll use this one.

Here's my question:

The book A Lifelong Passion on page 10, NII wrote on his diary about going in a break with Ernie and Alix and his Papa driving. Can someone please explain or show a picture of what a break is?

Here's the entry - "May 30, 1884. This morning Mama went to Petersburg. It has got colder today. Lunched alone with Papa. Went out with Ernie and Alix in the break, with Papa driving. Went for a walk."

Thank you for the help. :)

So was the photo session of the Empress in 1906 taken after the Opening of the Duma?

You mean you have one of those sought after books? Neat. Thank you for sharing :)

It looks like a sreenshot from a documentary. Must be in russian. If I can only understand russian  :(

I wonder if Anna Vyrubova took that picture herself.

I recall the same image at one of the Beinecke albums. Thank you for posting :)

I second that. I don't think it's a life preserver but the suit itself. It's just cute that Derevenko's the one doing the tying. :)

Now who is the person on the right?

No, I think it is the Empress because of the wedding ring on her finger. It seems the pic was retouched to emphasize her feature.

There is a Faberge item that used that picture of ON. It even included a miniature of NII. Here's the link:

The open surprise includes a miniature of ON based on the photo just posted.

Most likely Eric.

I've never been to Russia and dreams of the day I'll be able to, so I'm asking this question - how cold is the Moscow River during the hottest month of the year?
Is it shockingly cold or cold like here in VA, USA during August?

Thank you for the answer :)
