Maria Nicholaievna / Re: Maria Anecdotes

I just happened to come across this quote from "Historical Anecdotes" thread (under Imperial Family).

The story about Maria falling out of the window happened in 1912. It can be found on this thread (post by Greg King, 5/3/04):;action=display;num=1077194467

The story goes: "One day in 1912 at Livadia, the four Grand Duchesses crept into their father's Study on the upper floor of the White Palace at Livadia in his absence.  The Emperor was unusually protective of his privacy, and almost always locked the room when he was gone, but on this day he had forgotten, and the temptation proved too much.  While the girls were exploring, their mother began to call for them.  As her voice became louder and more insistent, they panicked.  Marie ran for the window, and told her sisters to lower her out; she was dangling by her arms mid-way down the side of the Palace when Alexandra apparently walked into the room, and her sisters let go so as not to get caught.  She fell to the garden, some fifteen feet below, with a thud; luckily, she landed in some shrubbery, and was only bumped and bruised, but their adventure had been discovered and they were forbidden to go out for several weeks thereafter."

I totally agree with you Blessotma............Joanna, BobG, Vladimir, Sarushka, geglov and many others each contributed so much to Bob Atchison's website which in turn made us more appreciative of the Alexander Palace, Feodorovsky Sobor, Tsarskoe Selo and Russian history.

I am still waiting and hoping that a book about the AP and the late Kuchumov will be published soon.

The book "A Gathered Radiance" by McLees on p. 18 mentions the Hesse children having beds of simple army cots.

Even if the child looked like a goat, I think AF would have loved the child with all her heart and soul.

Great detective work Sarushka. The trees are good indication of the location of the pic. Now definitely Livadia but I think 1900. I have to read Spiridovitch's book to find out for how long the IF stayed at Livadia.

It could have been Margareta Eagar (sic) and I don't think those are Grand Dukes. They may have been generals or adjutants who were privileged enough to play with the GD's.

Just take it as lesson learned VOF.

Please do not let this incident hamper your interest/passion for the Romanovs/Royalty/European History.

Just a word of advice.

My guess it was taken at Livadia during 1900 around the time the Tsar suffered from typhoid.
(I'm actually torn between Livadia and Peterhof as the location of the pic)
