Indeed, Anastasia might have been able to have gotten Alexei to think of more cheerful things for awhile, rather than his illness. Anastasia liked to make people laugh.. ;)

Yes, Anastasia didn't fuss over him, and this helped, I agree. It must be awful for it to be driven in your face that you are ill, when you are suffering, by being fussed over ina way that's not necessary. So by not being fussed over when he was, this perhaps made him feel more normal, and think of other things.

I think there are several reasons why they were so close. The first reason is likely that they were the two closest in age. I always wished I had had a sibling close to me in age but both my brother and sister are ten years older than me.  Anastasia was only 3 years older than Alexei.
The second reason is likely that they were the closest in personality. Both had a bit of an impish streak whereas Maria, Tatiana, and Olga were more reserved.
And I had never thought of this before but perhaps it WAS because she did not make a fuss over him because he was sick. I'm sure he got tired of hearing his parents and older sisters telling him  to be careful or else he might get hurt. I'm sure Anastasia just treated him as if he were a normal kid.

I completely agree with your first two reasons, but I think you all are speculating on the last one. We have no way of knowing whether or not Anastasia fussed over him. Based on what I've heard they all did it and being the only boy in their family and sick, it doesn't surprise me. The first two reasons you gave are probably the most legitimate.

The first two reasons are very legitimate ones, and it's a good opinion on why they were so close. Both stand up as being very true.
