Pre-revolutionary currency
« on: November 12, 2004, 10:28:04 PM »
I have some Russian pre-revolutionary bills ranging from 1897 to 1919 (apparently they printed them about two years ahead as it still has the double-headed Romanov eagle on it). I was wondering if anyone knows if these may have any value?

Thanks.

Helen

Hi Helen,

Usually most of the smaller denomination bills issued during Nikolai II's period can be purchased for only a few $'s.

There were millions of units printed until January 1917.

Is your 1919 bill inscribed with the words Severnaya Rossiya at the top of the bill?

I don't really care if they are not worth much, I just think they are very cool! One of them has a portrait of Alexander III and another Catherine the Great. I have about 7of them. I am looking at the 1919 bill now, and on top of the bill it looks like it says something like "...na Yugi Rossii"... so no, not "Severnaya Rossiya".  I also have a 1917 one, it looks like it is from Odessa.

Hi Helen,

Those larger denomination bills with the Emperors and Catherine the Great are really beautiful. There are also two different 500-Ruble bills which depict Peter the Great, one issued in 1898 and the second one was issued in 1912.

Just to have these bills as collectors pieces is really nice, regardless of their market value. I enjoy my collection just for that reason.

I do not have any currency from Yujnaya Rossiya. Your bill might actually belong to General Wrangel's Army. ;)

Hi Hellfire,

Nikolai II did not provide his signaure on paper bills.

Two signatures appear, one is the Manager and the second one belonged to the Cashier of the State bank.

The best book that I have ever seen on Czarist currency is one that I purchased in Helsinki. The book "Czarist Russian Paper Money 1769-1917" is in English and is full of high quality colour photographs.

I purchased this book from the publisher, Holmasto Coins and Medals. The link to their site is:

I hope the book is still in print.
