Joanna:

An old friend of mine donated the carpet - it was custom made, I think, and no they aren't offering it for sale.

The carpets used in the Mauve and Pallisander Rooms were not special patterns and you can find very close - if not identical designs today.  I was quite surprized to learn this.

Joanna:

I hope so - he had wanted to do the Mauve Room as well. His company makes very, very expensive custome carpets for people like Elton John and Oprah Winfrey.  He made some beautiful carpets in the pattern of the floors from Pavlovsk.

Since it's possible the looms or the actual patterns for these carpets may exist it would be best to make them the same way the originals were made.

Perhaps, in the end, he bought the carpeting from one of the original suppliers and just donated it.  Next time I speak to him I will ask.

Roman Meltzer was the decorator and he ordered fabrics and carpets for the Palace from different firms in Petersburg and also direct from suppliers.  He could have purchased British carpets from a French store or retailer.  I have his billing for the carpet to the court but it doesn't say.  I am sure it's in the records somewhere.
