Who put this tacky piece of tat up? They should have least  had the dates correct.

Yes it is quite bizarre to say the least.

Fortunately, it looks temporary.

Let's hope so or the best that be done is for Mother Nature to cover it with snow as the winter hits the Alexander Palace Park.

I asked about this memorial on a another thread, but
none of the many AP-afficiados on this forum
seem to know anything about it!
I was surprised to find it there!

The heading on the plaque says something like:
The house of the tsar family.
At least they got 1917 right!

1917?  The end of the monarchy, perhaps. They died in  1918.

The dates had me puzzled too.  Perhaps they are the dates the family used the palace?  Would that fit, were they never in residence there in 1894?  Just trying to make sense of it...

Maybe you and I can agree that the IF
had their home at the AP till 1917?

With this said, I'll
bow out of this thread!

It is still rather crass. I hope it is removed. The Alexander Palace is their memorial.

The cross says, "Home of the tsar's family." Therefore, the dates are intended to reflect when the imperial family lived in the palace, NOT their actual lifespan.  ::)

It's still quite inappropriate and insignificant.

I'm not sure where the "driveway" is, but I visited the Alexander Palace on 15 September, and walked all around, and I didn't see such a monument.

My daughter and I wandered through the Alexander Palace and the surrounding grounds on two separate occassions last August. We never noticed any such monument. Perhaps it was removed after June because it was deemed to be an unapproved structure?

That monument is (was) incredibly ghastly and yes most inappropriate.

I'm not sure where the "driveway" is

One last time:
According to the Oxford English Dictionary:
A drive/driveway is a short, private road leading up to a house.
The cross was there when I visited the AP on June 14th, 2007.

I asked if anyone knew it's provenance, but all I got was was some
snooty remarks about it's being tasteless and hideous.
Well, maybe it is, but that's not my point! Somebody had put
it there for a reason. That "someone" wanted to put
up an almost tombstone-like memorial. There's also a framed
picture of Alexei, as you can see.

To judge from the remarks of the two Russian guides
I was in contact with, the AP and the last IF were best
forgotten! I even had to explain why I wanted our small
group to go there, even if it was only for a short stop en
route from the Catherine Palace back to "Pieter".

Now, whoever put up that cross wanted the
last IF to be remembered. So maybe it's "crass"
and "tasteless" or whatever derogatory words you
can dish out about it.

However I take it that the memorial was placed in the
drive/driveway with every good and honest intention, and
there is no need to be patronizing about that!
