Alexei's cats: Zubrovka & Kotka
« on: November 14, 2007, 11:10:26 AM »
Hi all!

I´m reading Lili Dehn´s book, and she wrote about Alexei: his chief pet at Tsarkoe was an ugly sandy and white kitten, which he once brought from G.H.Q.

Anyone´s got the idea, what G.H.Q. is?

I have no idea. They didn't have a "*" after GHQ, and explain it at the bottom?

According to Lili Dehn, Aleksei's cat's name was Zubrovka.

The IF also had a Siamese which Maria favored, and Olga had a third cat named Vaska.

I've also wondered the same thing..

Are there any references in letters or diaries about Olga's cat Vaska or Maria's cat?

I hope they were given to friends and retainers to look after when they left. I cannot imagine they were just left to fend for then selves. I have cats and spend most of my time running home to look after them and I know the IF were animal lovers in the extreme, especially Alexis it seems, and it must have broken their hearts to leave pets behind not knowing what was to happen. For me that would have been the worst things of all to endure.

Lili Dehn says:

'I have often wondered what became of him [Zubrovka] when the IF were taken to Tobolsk'.

I recall Helen Rappaport did come up with some information about what happened to at least one of the cats. I'll keep looking through my files and see if I can find it.

No, I think it was an email response to some questions I sent her this summer.
