Tatiana's religious attitudes
« on: December 09, 2007, 08:49:59 PM »
It's said that Olga really felt religious with her heart, but Tatiana felt it was a duty imposed on her. Why the different feelings? I was thinking it could have been because Alexandra was the one who always wanted Tatiana to go and pray with her, so Tatiana didn't really have a chance to feel it as much as Olga did, since it sort of presented itself as a duty.

I realize this could be touchy, so I just want to make it clear that I'm not saying I thought Tatiana didn't believe in God or anything.

OTOH Tatiana's recovered possessions had a lot of religious books.  Also she noted down religious quotes in a notebook. I think what it may have been was Olga felt religion more through the heart, and tatiana through the intellect.

I think that's a fair assessment. I believe it was Gibbs who suggested that Tatiana's religious devotion might have been connected to a desire to please her parents.

what?
i'm confused! i'm sorry.

it seems to me that your saying she ignored her own personal opinion of the religious views and went to church to please her parents?

am i right?
or am i wrong.

I think what Sarushka is saying is that Gibbs was the one with the idea that Tatiana was religious out of filial duty, but that may well be just Gibbs's own opinion. Like I suggested, the evidence Tatiana herself left behind would suggest that religion spoke to her intellect more than to the heart.

I don't think Tatiana feel religion as a mere duty and went to church only to please her parents. She was less expressive than her elder sister, and much less talkative, so , people tends to thing she was cold and not as sensitive as Olga was. No proof about it. Maybe Tatiana was shy, like her mother, or had some difficulty to show her real emotions and toughts, but I think we can't said she didn't feel religion as deep as her sister. Olga and Tatiana personalities were very different, but both of them were religious...on their own way.

Very well said RA. I could really relate to her with that. It was Mr. Gibbs observation on the girls' religiosity in his own perspective. Being religious/spiritual doesn't need to be overly expressed for the sake of others, but rather a personal/one-on-one relation with The One above in the depths of one's heart. Maybe that's what Tatiana was, she may seem looked cold outside but very warm and loving inside. And on her being the one who her mother chooses to pray with the most, is because she's the more favorable(or who's always with her mother) than the other girls, as we already know.

I have to agree.. that sums it up totally! in my opinion.

That's interesting actually. I can imagine that out of all the girls Olga felt everything more from the heart, and nothing out of particular duty. What I mean is, that if Olga did not feel religeon from the heart she may not have expressed it, wheras Tatiana would have expressed it whether she felt it from the heart or not.
