New Additions to the Palace Website
« on: December 26, 2007, 09:55:55 PM »
I have just added some new things to the palace site:

A 1923 Interview with Patriarch Tikhon by an American who worked with the YMCA at http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/tikhoninterview.html.  There are some very wise comments about Evangelicals and the Orthodox church that apply to today.  It is interesting to read about his meeting with the new Patriarch, who lived for 9 years in the USA and was the Bishop of San Francisco and was later posted in New York.  As you probably know he was killed by the Bolshevik regime and has been made a saint in the Orthodox church.

There are four new biographies by Meriel Buchannan, the daughter of the British Ambassador in Darmstadt and St. Petersburg.  I have put up her profiles of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig at http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/ernstludwigbuchannan.html, Grand Duchess Elizabeth at http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/elizabethbuchannan.html, Grand Duchess Cyril (Victoria Melita) at http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/victoriamelitabuchannan.htmland Grand Duchess Olga Nicholaievna at http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/olgabuchannan.html.  Meriel knew the first three personally and saw the GD Olga on several occasions.

There is a translation of an interview with Geli Ryabov on his discovery of the Imperial Remains at http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/ryabovtv.html.

There is also an excellent character sketch of Nicholas and Alexandra by Dominic Lieven from his great book Nicholas II at http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/lievan1.html.

There are also new ZOOMs of palace rooms on the right side of all of the pages.

Am working to finish my gift, the translation from the original French of a 1912  145 page illustrated guidebook to the Kremlin Grand Palace in Moscow.  We were so happy to find an original first edition in pristine condition! It was authorized by Baron Freederickz, and intended to give information to tourists as they walked through the tour, room by room.  It is as close as we could hope to come to being able to walk through the Grand Palace during the reign of Nicholas II.  My goal is to have it up by Orthodox Christmas, Jan. 7. Keep your eyes peeled!

Ouch! Well, don't know if I'll go that far, though I definitely would appreciate a medically supervised skin peel! In the meantime, I'm sure we're all looking forward to being tourists at the 1912 Kremlin, as approved by Baron Freederickz no less. Many thanks in advance, and continued Happy Holidays!

Yes, that will be brilliant ~ a rare find indeed. Meanwhile, thank you for the extracts from Meriel Buchanan's 'Queen Victoria's Relations' (1954). There are more biographies in her slightly later book 'Victorian Gallery' (1956), which people would probably also like. I am currently researching the Buchanan clan and their descendants for an article, and would appreciate any direction towards sources. Meriel's books are so hard to find these days.

Bob,

Very good job, indeed! We hardcore AP viewers have generally long since seen all that we're interested in on the website proper, so it's always a pleasant surprise to find original stuff appear there. The sketches by Meriel Buchanan were especially appreciated, as her books are indeed hard to find now. Thanks.

Thanks so much.

Tho a newbie here, I've devoured the resources you've made avaiable here already and I'm very appreciative of your further additions.

What a great job of sharing, thank you.
