The value or prestige of a claim of descent is based upon the importance in history of the progenitor not on the religion that he practiced.

For example these three Jews:

The Imperial House of Ethiopia proudly claims descent from King Solomon and uses the Star of David in its symbology.

The Royal House of Georgia claims descent from King David and uses his harp and sling and stone in its symbology.

Who claims descent from Ehud the one handed sea bass monger at the Helsinki Fish Market?

Someday the descendants of Mussillini will proudly claim their patrimony and have one up on the great grandchildren of Luigi who painted FIATs his entire life but committed no war crimes.

In "Lost Splendor" Felix says that the President of the Duma, Michael Rodzianko, was a distant relative of his. How were they related? From what I read in his memoirs Rodzianko and his wife Anna "Ania" Nikolaevna were friends of the family.

Thanks!

Back to geneology: according to greg king's book, the man who killed rasputin, the yussupov family descended from one of the prophet Mohammed's nephew's, Ali. they roamed around somewhere, were nomads, killed and pillaged and were wealthy. they were in the service of the russians and eventually convereted from Islam to Orthodoxy and married into the Russian population, changing their name from Yussuov (i think) to Yussopov). i'm a bit hazy on the details but if you want i could check later and post the details.

Annie Suggested that I post the following here:

Dear Annie,

Knowing you are a forum administrator on the Yussupovs and having read your posts over the years I thought you might be the person to turn to.

I'm looking for some information on the Yussupov Arms. More specifically I would like to know what is in the banner of the double eagle cresting of the later arms. Also, I'm curious what the motto is. Lastly, I'm curious what components make up these later arms as commonly seen. Are they crossed with Sumerakov-Elston or Prcss. Irina ?

I have tried contacting the Russian College of Heraldry to no avail and also the publisher of Russian Heraldry and Nobility.

If you could help at all with this information or at least point me in the right direction I'd be most greatful.

Best Regards,

Jacon

Ps. Some of your members might be interested to know that the famous Portrait of Prince Felix Felixovitch Sr. by Valentin Serov is to be offered at Sotheby's on the 18th of Semptember. It is being sold along with the rest of the Rostropovich -Vishnevskaya collection. The sale is the largest single owner collection of Pre-Revolutionary Russian Art, Ceramics, and Objet d'Art to come onto the market in modern times. I provide a copy and the link below.

I did suggest he post this here since I didn't have the answers. The above is the whole PM sent to me, but I don't want anyone to think I am telling people I am an admin here, I am not. I guess I just seem like one since I'm here so much. ;)

I hope someone can find this heraldry for our new friend! :) Brian? Ashanti? Anybody?

I haven't been able to find anything!  :( I'm not positive but I believe I once read/heard somewhere that the family motto was somewhere in the Moika palace? I could be wrong but that's the closest thing I can pull from memory.

I found that Rodzianko's wife was Anna Nikolaievna Golitsyna, the daughter of Prince Nicholas Mikhailovich Golitsyn and his wife, the former Countess Maria Sergeevna Sumarokova. This is how she was related to the Yussupov family.

Madame Rodzianko was probably Zenaida's greatest friend apart from Ella.

Very interesting... I've always been curious who she was close friends with. It must have been interesting to have such a connection in the government too.
