perhaps she went grey rather early? and thats why we thought her hair was lighter ?

Zenaida did have dark hair but she did begin to gray early. There are two small paintings of Zenaida which show her with lighter hair however the majority of her portraits show her with black hair. The same thing with Felix, some paintings have him with lighter hair while others have him with black hair.

There is one more image of her with near blond hair...



miniature frame with painting of Zenaida. I can not find the colored copy of the miniature.  The image below is, if I remember correctly, an accurate coloring of the portrait.



I'm not sure why she was painted with such light colored hair. Perhaps the artists wanted something different, or perhaps she wore a wig?

Perhaps is just a wig as you said or the painter idealized her simply!!
Anyways she looks beautiful with dark or light hair ;-)
