]Actually the pearl is the Regente...once part of the French crown jewels and bought by the Youssoupoffs in 1887.

Thank you for the correction. My source was "Nicholas and Alexandra," Sergei Mironenko, ed., a book published by the Hermitage. How odd that they would make such a mistake.

Here is the quote:

"The family jewels included the Polar Star diamond, the diadem of the Queen of Naples, the ear-rings of Marie Antoinette, and one of the famous Peregrine pearls that had once belonged to King Philip II of Spain. This is the pearl Zinaida Yusupova is wearing on a long necklace in the portrait by Flameng."
I have  copy of the same book..but it is obvious that the pearl...by size, shape and mount is wrongly labelled.

Oh, I don't doubt it, I just find it ironic that they would make that mistake.

Zinaida must have looked like her father, I don't see any resemblence to her mother at all...

The shape of the eyes might have been the same...maybe. The mother was more attractive as a young woman. Perhaps it isn't best to judge by this portrait, but I don't really see any resemblance, either. Does anyone have a photo/portrait of her father?

Nicholas Yusupov as a child

As a young man...but not a great quality photo

but yes...you can see that Zenaida took more after her father than mother...although both her parents were attractive according to all accounts.

Thank you so much! I don't think I have ever seen a portrait of her father. She most certainly did resemble him.

It must be remembered that Zenaidas parents shared a grandmother the FIRST Princess Tatiana..so there could have been some mutal characteristics..that Zenaida inherited !!!

It was hush hush although everyone knew at the time. First cousins aren't suppose to be allowed to marry in Russian Orthodox church, in fact I believe after they married an investigation was opened but an order from the Tsar had it closed.

Wow. Was it because the Yussupovs wanted to keep their vast fortune in the family? In other words, was it an arranged marriage, or did the two really want to marry each other?

Are you sure?
Prince Nicolas Borisovich's grandmother (zenaida's father) was Tatiana Vasilievna Von Engelhardt who was Prince Potemkin's niece; On the same hand, Tatiana Alexandrovna de Ribeaupierre's mother was Ekaterina Mikhailovna Potemkina, so she was also related to the Potemkin family, if they were relatives it was on the Potemkin side but as of being first cousins????... I do not think so...

I'm confused by all the Tatiana Yussupovas. The dress looks 1840s or so.
