NOTE: personally, i've given-up being concerned whether that pearl is the peregrina, pelegrina or the *#%@ ballerina!!    no-one can seem to agree and everyone believes their answer is the right one -- abercorn.  phillip II.  elizabeth taylor.  yusupov.  --      feh.       --  i've started calling the stupid thing (beautiful though it is) the perepela.  :-)  :)

Yes, I ended up in a discussion some time ago with another poster and I had to laugh once I read this. Maybe perepela is the best answer...since I stayed more confused ...once I tried to research it.  ;D

This portrait was painted of Zinaida by Francois Flameng in 1894. She is wearing one of the famous Peregrine pearls, once the property of King Philip II of Spain.

Actually the pearl is the Regente...once part of the French crown jewels and bought by the Youssoupoffs in 1887.

You are correct, and so am I...sort of. She was wearing the Peregrine Pearl, however, I misidentified which pearl was the Peregrine.  It was correctly identified on a German website discussing her jewelry.

No the pearl is defintely the Regente...it was sold a couple of years ago and it was obvious from the catalogue pics that it was not the Pelegrina (which I saw in May 1987, when it was sold by Christies, Geneva). The Pelegrina was smaller, more ovoid and did not have as ornate a diamond surmount....this subject has already been discussed...

Does anyone know where I can find a better picture of this? It appears to have Ella and Zenaida at the front and Felix Sr and Serge in the back row, as well as Maria and Dmitry.

FOUND IT !!!!! As you can see a much better quality picture where you can clearly see Felix Sr, Serge, Dmitry, Maria, Ella and Zenaida. Don't know where Felix or Nicholas are...maybe they were running around doing their own thing?

Beautiful, Ashanti, thanks!

You're probably right about Felix and his brother, they must have been out having a good time.

Her sister Tatiana is in the portrait behind Zenaida. Tatiana died young.

Tatiana died in 1888, I believe. The pictures were taken around 1899-1901.

Svetabel is correct, the portrait behind Zenaida is that of her sister Tatiana.
