Many, many thanks Ashdean!  This is exactly the information I have been seeking.  Sounds like she lead a comfortable life in her latter years.

Personally I think the last 20 years of her life were mainly very sad (bt perhaps no sadder than many older people then or now!).....her lot compared to many of her peers might have seemed enviable....a de luxe exit from Russia...enough salvaged treasures to live comfortably if quietly and to help others.....but for the Princess it must have been unremittingly sad..her husbands ill health all the tensions associated with his decline...and after his death and the move to Paris although she was with her adored son and grand daughter and was comfortable in the small lodge...the increasing money difficulties...seeing the table silver pawned..the Pelegrina which she regarded as a talisman...often engaged and then having to leave her lodge....Hopefully in the home looked after by her devoted maid she found other congenial company ...they and her visitors helped fill and brighten the  days of her twilight years...and for the last 5 years or so the money situation thanks to the libel damages were drastically improved in that the threat of baliffs and Felix being under a cloud were improved.

You make some very good and enlightened observations, Ashdean.  Thank you for sharing!  Zenaida is just one example of people that left the glittering word of Imperial Russia and made a life for themselves elsewhere.  It just makes one wonder if perhaps on some level some of these people were ultimately just as happy, or happier, than they might have been before.  One would hope that despite the loss of great riches, Zenaida for example, had enough to live a comfortable, fulfilling life - despite the challenges that often come with old age, etc.  I think there must be numerous untold stories of people that not only survived but thrived after the revolution.  Also, there are those that lived just as well monetarily - but those stores are not often told as they do not have the "drama" factor  :)

Thankyou for the compliment!.
In my youth I knew someone very well who had met Felix several times and his mother a couple of times and never forgot this elderly lady with traces of her former legendary beauty and great dignity. Mary Rothwell the daughter of prosperous Mancunian parents had as a teenager spent 6 months at a Parisian finishing school run by a emigree Princess (I often wonder if it was that attended by Princess Marina and the Hon Dorothy Paget). 60 years later this lady who was like a third grandmother to me...recalled Zenaida coming in a cab for tea with the Princess....and she and another pupil being told that they had met the most beautiful woman in Imperial Russia.
Her memories of Felix was less starry she thought him rather affected and very demanding....an assessment that was not unique!

The last portrait is being displayed at one of the Winter Palace rooms, and even without marking that's Zenaida. Like an ordinary painting at the exposition about the Interiors.

Thanks for the info. I believe a copy of this painting was being displayed at the Moika palace at one point. Do you know who the artist is?

In the painting, is she holding the Pelegrina?

I believe she is. It's funny cause until I scanned the image and enlarged it, I had not noticed it in her hand. All this time I thought she was just playing with her pearl necklace.
