I do not believe it either, Ethel and Alexandra actually met, that's why I wrote
it is said. She imitated Alexandra's voice in the movie- she must have spoken with a very soft voice. This she could have heard from somebody who really met Alexandra in life.
Btw, did you knew the part of Alexandra in the 1971 movie was first offered to Audrey Hepburn, she must have refused it.
There were also press-reports that said Rex Harrison and Vanessa Redgrave would take the leads as Nicholas and Alexandra. A recent biografie of Sam Spiegel the producer of this fillm, stated he never offered them the leads. They wanted unknown actors -at least unknown in the US- that's why they choose Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman. Unknown as filmactors, but famous in Britain on stage. Real classical British stage actors!
Being one of Janet's Suzman's biggest fans, she can do nothing wrong with me. Wonderful actress
