Janet Suzman of course. Second place goes to Greta, who was great in Rasputin.

However, if you did the movie today, I would say that Natasha Richardson (Not to be confused with Miranda Richardson) would be sensational as Alix.

No doubt Janet Suzman!!! Who else?
Greta Sacci was terrible :P
Anna Aleksahina was only a brief appearance.
Unfortunately I have never had the chance to see Ethel Barrymore of Linda Bellingham performe as Alix.

For such a lousy movie [Rasputin & the Empress], EB was actually quite good, I think she BELIEVED she was Alexandra !

It is said she actually met Alexandra, perhaps she had some personallity problems after that, who knows.

I suppose that it has to be Janet, although I pesonally found her a little on the abrasive side.
You might think this a bit mad, and maybe she is too old anyway now, but I always thought that Meryl Streep as Karen Blixen in 'Out of Africa' had a look of Alix about her; she certainly can play complex, strong women.....

Ethel Barrymore met Alix?  Anyone know when and where?  She certainly looks like she is inhabiting the role in that photo!

Martyn,

I do not believe it either, Ethel and Alexandra actually met, that's why I wrote it is said. She imitated Alexandra's voice in the movie- she must have spoken with a very soft voice. This she could have heard from somebody who really met Alexandra in life.

Btw, did you knew the part of Alexandra in the 1971 movie was first offered to Audrey Hepburn, she must have refused it.
There were also press-reports that said Rex Harrison and Vanessa Redgrave would take the leads as Nicholas and Alexandra. A recent biografie of Sam Spiegel the producer of this fillm, stated he never offered them the leads. They wanted unknown actors -at least unknown in the US- that's why they choose Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman. Unknown as filmactors, but famous in Britain on stage. Real classical British stage actors!

Being one of Janet's Suzman's biggest fans, she can do nothing wrong with me. Wonderful actress ;)

 :)

I think Janet S. was superb in "N + A" - but I do love
Greta Sacci and think that if Alix had aged a little more gracefully, she could have looked just as beautiful!

I do think that Vanessa Redgrave would have been an inspired choice also.

1. Janet Suzman
2. Gayle Hunnicutt
3. Lynda Bellingham
4. Ethel Barrymore ( the script was simply too pathetic . . . )
5. Greta Scacchi
