Michael Jayston was excellent. He even looked like Nicholas. I wish he had more powerful scenes to play though in Nicholas and Alexandra rather than the over romantic version of the film.

Michael Jayston is the one who looks the most like the real Nikolaï, and portrayed him very well, but for me, Aleksander Galibin (The Romanovs: an imperial family) made a better portrayal of the Tsar.

Hi all.  I am a newbie here!

Which OTMA features do you think "make" the casting correct?  For me it is: Olga - forehead and jawline, Tatiana - eyes and chin, Marie - eyes and jawline, Anastasia - nose and chin (and bangs).

Hey Mikey. Welcome to the forum.  :)
I pretty much agree with you.

Olga: Forehead, nose, jawline.
Tatiana: Eyes, cheekbones, chin.
Maria: Eyes, eyebrows, lips.
Anastasia: Nose, lips, chin.

Julia Stiles would be perfect for Olga. She has all the right features and would do a great acing job. Something just isn't right with Keira Knightly being Tatiana...

Anastasia's bangs/fringe is certainly an important feature, but I think too many filmmakers have relied exclusively on hairstyle to ID Anastasia. It's almost like they think to themselves, "just get someone (anyone) with bangs."  ;)

And I definitely agree with you on Julia Stiles as Olga!

I agree.  Hair doesn't make the character.  I liked the casting of Anastasia in the Alan Rickman Rasputin only because she was a dead ringer for Sir Ian McKellen (who played Nicholas II).  But she looked nothing like Anastasia.  The others (OTM) looked good together as sisters, but not sure they were great choices either.

Then again, the girls have never been a main focus in the features.  It is either "Anastasia and the rest" or "the pretty girls in the background".  I am reading OTMA, the stage show, now.  Maybe I will do it.

Of course, my casting of locals probably wouldn't be any better!  LOL

Wow, it's been such a long time since I've posted on the board, but I couldn't help but notice how striking those pics were of Scarlett Johanssen (which someone posted on the thread a while back).  I think they were from "Girl with a Pearl Earring."  I was just struck by how amazingly similar her features were to Tatiana---to the point of  looking almost genuine!   :o  However, she might be getting too old now to play Tatiana.  Actually, someone else who struck me as being able to play one of the older two GDs was Jessica Biel in "The Illusionist."  She wears period clothing very nicely, and her whole demeanor in that movie struck me as someone who couldv'e been a good actress for the older two GDs.  That all being said, I do think it would be better to cast young unknowns as OTMA.  That way the audience wouldn't get caught up in the idea of some big name and would be able to focus more on the actual depth of the character.

Hello! I'm new to the forum--have been following these threads for a few weeks before deciding to take the plunge. Anyway, I've been thinking about this actress for the Grand Duchess Anastasia in regards to "who should play whom" in a Romanov film:

the actress is Elizabeth Earl, and she plays Frances in the 1997 movie, "Fairy Tale: A True Story".

let me know what you think!

Wow!  Really a good choice!  Welcome to the Forum (or am I still too new to do that?)

I've checked everywhere, and I didn't find this kind of topic, so here it goes...

Who do you think was the best movie Aleksei, and what scenes do you like about him?

As for me, it is Volodya Grachev, of Romanovy: Ventsenosnaya Semya. This young actor really showed how joyful, charming, wise-beyond-his-years and compassionate was Aleksei.

One scene I really like is when his father asked him if he thought he had been a good Tsar? Aleksei look at his father for 2 or 3 seconds, then embrace his father, telling him that he loves him. Another one is when he defends his sister's honor, by challenging the much older soldier who insulted her in a duel. Just to show how serious a young boy of that time can be about such things! It was very funny, and touching at the same time!

You quickly cared for this little boy, as the young Volodya played him.

How about you? Who was the best Aleksei, and why?

What was Ian McKellen wearing the Order of St.Catherine for? That was purely for women!!! What a mistake to make!! Of course Michael Jayston wins hands down. He was superb as Nicholas II.

I think Christain Bale is one of the best.  I believe he's in the one called "The Mystery of Anna."  I think that's what it's called?????  I haven't watched it yet, I'm dying to though, but what pics I've seen of him he looks just like Alexei.
