Who do you think it was? I actually think that Janet Suzman was excellent as Alexandra, and the problems there are with the script, not her portrayal.

I liked Janet Suzman best as well... although I thought the Alexandra from Fall of Eagles was oddly good- by that, I mean she was overacting quite a bit, but I still enjoyed watching her- she conveyed the 'spirit' of the young Alix pretty well I thought.

Janet Suzman remains my favourite too. But I also quite enjoyed Gayle Hunnicutt's overacting. Just love it how she reprimands poor Nicky at Stavka - haha.
Lynda Bellingham was fine, but a bit too insipid I think.

Aloha all!

Put in my vote for Janet Suzman as well -- she had the bearing of a Tsarina and was closer than anyone else to what I personally think Alix was like.   :)

Janet Suzman was the best. However, Claire Bloom was very good in her brief performance as Alix in "Anna Anderson - The Riddle of Anastatia."

Janet Suzman was excellent. Gayle Hunnicutt was quite forgetable. Claire Bloom certainly appeared fragile and a touch disabled. Michael Jayston was excellent as Nicholas II while Omar Sharif was simply terrible.

On the contrary, Gayle Hunnicutt was excellent as Alexandra by the usual norms applied to actors. Suzman was also good, although limited by a script that tried to do too much.

My above all favourite portrayal was by Janet Suzman. However, even hers is overshadowed, if but briefly, by Gayle Hunnicutt's performance in one episode of Fall of Eagle's. In "Tell The King The Sky Is Falling", I found Gayle captured Alexandra perfectly. She had all the right combinations of paranoia, insecurity, and demanding authority. This explodes in the scene in which Alexandra visits Stavka to encourage Nicholas to make the right choices on the government. It's just my opinion, I've yet to view Romanovy: Ventsenosnaya Semya so I cannot judge on Lynda Bellingham's performance.

I think she looks almost exactly like Greta Scacchi. I suppose she might work.

I thought Gayle Hunnicutt was pretty hilarious as Alix actually.

On the other hand, imo the best movie Nicholas is Ian Mckellen. Michael Jayston was good, but I hate the fish eye thing he did when he was angry. Ian Mckellen I reckon perfectly captured Nicky's gentle charm and his genuine nature. But that's just cause he's an amazing actor, the script he had wasn't all that great.

I agree about Sir Ian, he was exactly how I thought he would be based on the readings that I had done about Nicky in terms of his nature. My favorite Alexandra was JS.  Especially the scene with Rasputin in the chapel and how she fidgetted with the icons. I can still remember how her voice sounded when she answered him with the line "They won't hear me when I pray."

Yes Suzman was really was quite good. Jayston was superb and evening looked like Nicholas II. McKellen never did.

I think that too, the resemblance between Jayston and the real Nicholas is incredibly good, or so I thought. Sir Ian did job well done and is a talented actor, but I just have to say I enjoyed Jayston's performance that much better. I thought he got a better feel for Nicholas.
