I'm going with Michael Jayston, but that's only because Ian McKellen's role as Nicholas in Rasputin really wasn't as big as Jayston's role in N&A. Something that for a time did irritate me about Ian's performance in Rasputin (though I love him dearly, and he is one of my favourite actors) was the fact that he was constantly scratching at his beard, until I read in an article that the Tsar actually did do that! So THAT didn't bother me so much anymore ;D But I still think Michael Jayston was better, and did look a little more like the real Nicholas. Ian's nose was very round ;)
Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we're gone and wonder who we were? How bravely we fought? How fiercely we loved?

For me, Ian McKellan. Loved that movie.

Is this the same Tom Baker who played Dr Who and most recently the voice over for Little Britian?

Thanks Anna, over thirty years and he has changed.  I most recently saw him on the DVD of Little Britian and he has put on a lot of weight.  But I couldn't tell if it was him or not when he was in Nicholas and Alexandra. His eyes look different I guess it was from that beard.

Yes, as people grow older they sometimes gain weight.and so do actors. Tom Baker is still very active, lately he does a lot of voice overs.
I always thought he had that sort of hypnotic, peering look.

Another young actress who would portray one of OTMA well is a British actress named Amelia Warner.

She's a perfect Tatiana!

http://www.livadia.org/trw/movies/na/maria.jpg what movie is that from?

That's from the movie "Nicholas And Alexandra" which was made in the 70s.  It's based on Massie's book "Nicholas And Alexandra".

Oh no, don't say that!!! I can't stand him!!! I used to love him, I guess it comes with change. Still, I've a boy in my school who looks so much like Alexei, it's rather scary. I want to show you all a pic. His facial features- the jaw and the eyes...Everything! Amazing. I will try and show you, if I get permission from him!
I saw a man in a very regal theater last year who looked so much like Nicholas, he thought it strange that we kept staring at him.
There is another girl in our school who resembles Marie, strongly.
And if you watch the movie, Vanity Fair, you'll notice that one of the older daughters of the old man who buys the painting in th beginning, resembles Tatiana greatly. This is where I wish I had pictures...Hold on. :o Wait here you go!!!

You should see her in Vanity Fair! Almost dressed to the times...

I liked the one in Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra...I've forgotten who played Nicholas however. Good guy- Excellent acting and looked just like him. I see Ian Mckellen as Gandalf now...Doesn't work, but he's an excellent actor. I liked how Alexandra spoke too, the one in the same film. (Not Greta Sacchi) Though she was good too.

Peace out.

Whoa, haha, I completely agree because, lol I saw Vanity Fair too and thought the same thing. And I know you. Maybe that helps?  :D
But yes, we have an Alexei look alike, Maria and Nicholas that we know. Very strange indeed. But truly amazing.
