Nicholas and Alexandra as mainstream cultural phenomenon
« on: January 27, 2008, 09:32:31 AM »
Today I was in WHSmiths buying various cards for peoples' birthdays etc. I took a look at the (dreadful) Valentine's section, and there in the middle of one row was a card with a quote I recognised: "I love you, those three words have my life in them" - duly attributed to Alexandra, writing to Nicholas (though they called him "Nicholas III"!).

Just thought it was interesting to note how utterly mainstream and well-known their story has become, that they are now even on greeting cards.....

No, I didnt buy it. I thought it was interesting, but I don't collect things to do with Nicholas and Alexandra or anything like that. I have one portrait of her in my house, but that was given me by a friend, so it's more for the friend who gave to me than for her that I have it there...in memory too of an interest we both had when much younger I suppose.

If the design and quality of the card had been well done, I  also would have had to buy the card. The sentiment is a lovely one for Valentine's Day. The provenance of the verse as well as what it expresses is far more interesting than the verses churned out by Hallmark cards to Valentine's Day.

Nicholas III?  As atribute to their love, this would be unacceptable. As a curiosity, OK,  a bit of a trifle, right up there with the tee-shirts.

Sad to see the last imperial couple reduced to a cheap marketing campaign. I doubt any of us would mind if the monies raised from such cards went to restore the Alexander Palace. Somehow I doubt any of the monies will do any such thing.

Nicholas and Alexandra are certainly a mainstream, cultural phenomenon, which I think is a good way to put it. They are like some other royalty past and past present who almost become celebrity, although they lived far before the era when they could have been that. They just have all the qualities to become well known out in the world, and not just among royalty fans, as that's where so many Royals are left to languish. Love, power, tragedy, and wealth it might be added seem so glamourous to people, especially when royalty is added in. The idea of the card at least makes people think of the Romanovs who might not exactly be fans of theirs. I hope it wasn't done in a tacky way. If it wasn't it was probably a good idea, or at least a very interesting one.
