Tsar's valet or valets
« on: December 30, 2005, 01:47:21 PM »
Does anybody know how many personal valet di the Tsar use to have? Where did they live (I mean in  the AP)?
Are their names known? Did they die in Ekaterinenburg too?

A senior male valet by the last name of Trupp (only one) died along with the Tsar at Ekaterinburg. He was crudely buried with the Imperial Family by the Bolsheviks, as everyone knows, after the murders.
The IF was living along with this valet at the Ipatiev house, but in Tobolsk (Governor's Mansion), the valet probably lived separately from the Tsar and his family, since household staff lived in a house down the street.

Hi Gleb

From the Russian version of Anna Vyrubova's memoirs, she writes of the valet 'old man Ratsich' (sp), HM's kamerdiner, who served  tea once on the invitation of Nicholas to Alexandra and Anna when at Friedberg in 1910, most probably in the study reserved for the Tsar's use when staying in the castle.

the valet 'old man Ratsich' (sp),

In Nicholas II, Last of the Tsars by Marc Ferro there is a reference to "...Radzig, his devoted manservant...".

In 'Journal de la Générale A.V. Bogdanovitch', Payot Paris 1926, there are references to Radzig. One interesting entry on November 5, 1908 is "...Today, Radzig tells me interesting and disturbing facts..." Throughout the journal are intimate details of the Imperial family and court from which he quotes sources. It is interesting to note these as it confirms that the court was a sieve of leaks, betrayals within, and what was known amongst society was not only gossip but had a basis of truth.

I have been astonished to learn last week that the great grandmother of a friend was cooking for the Tsar Nicolas.

Unfortunately, they lost all documents at their arrival in France .

It would be interesting if some knows documents on the employees of the imperial kitchens ...

All employee records for the Imperial House are intact and in GARF.

"...In Nicholas II's reign - the Imperial Suite had 2 classes of officials, the first had 150 officers and the second had 73 - working 24 hours accompanying the emperor throughout the day..." This has been taken from the book 'The Court Of The Last Tsar' by Greg King. It is an amazing book, well written, full of details of the who and when and where of the daily life of the Tsar. I would recommend that you read it if you really want to know about a valet of NII.

Sorry Vassia,

This question has been answered so many times, I just figured all users knew the term.  GARF is the Russian acronym for the Russian State Federal Archives.

I am not sure if this was one of Nicholas II's valets or another whose specific duties related to handling travel arrangements but this is a rare insight into what N's luggage looked like during one of his trips to Germany:
