Have any of you taken digital copies of maria's other  paintings from the archival  micro film.

....does anyone know what number of paintings there  might be in the archives of Maria's

( and the G.D's in general)

any copies/ postings  will  be greatfully viewed!!

....Also...... anyone seen anything in the diaries  that would shed light on G.D Olga Alexandrovna's comment  that  Maria damaged  her hand quite badly in a carriage door getting on the  Imperial train??

Cosmo, if you or anyone else can give a specific date for the "Maria damaging her hand" incident, I will try and help you out.

I'm really  enjoying seeing Maria's paintings - are there any archives held of artwork by the IF that are easy to access?

The State Archives of the Russian Federation holds many drawings/paintings done by the children. I viewed one of the paintings done by Maria and a drawing by Olga, however the artwork must be viewed on microfilm.

Hi Raegan,

Do you know if the State Archive has the Romanov pictures in microfilm?  Sorry off-topic

Hi Peterhof. I am not sure if pictures are on microfilm because I have never researched pictures of the family. Helen_A has researched in St. Petersburg, and I have in Moscow, but our research has not focused on their photography. However, their letters, diaries, and artwork can be viewed on microfilm.

Thank you.

re Raegans  question.

..........I don't have a specific  date -  all I have is the quote from G.D Olga Alexandrovna

with reference to Anna Anderson claiming she had damaged her hand in a Landeau, as a footman had closed the door on her hand

G.D Olga  Alexandrovna  said   “…............ It was Marie, her elder sister, who got her hand hurt rather badly, and it did not happen in a carriage but on board the imperial train. Obviously someone, having heard something of the incident, had passed a garbled version of it to Mrs Anderson."

Someone who has read all the diaries MAY remember if it has been noted by someone else in the immediate family.

lets hope someone can shed some light on this

I've never come across it anywhere but in Olga Alexandrovna's memoirs.

I suppose this could have happened any time in the range of ten years or even more, so it would be kind of hard to pinpoint in the diaries without an approximate date at least...

“Marie has a bad finger since several days, so Vlad. Nik. cut it to-day in my room she was very good about it & did not move - those things hurt - it reminded me of Pss. Gedroitz whose 2 fingers I had to cut & bandage & the officers looked on through the door.”
I read this one from a letter of Alexandra to Nicholas on Jan. 28-th 1915. I am thinking this Marie might be the Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna but the next day, Alix sends a letter to Nicholas saying this: “- Baby stands - & I hope, by the time you return, that he will be able to walk again. Marie's finger is not yet right.”  So, I thought that the Marie stated on these excerpts is Maria Nikolaevna because Alix wrote the news about her just after she wrote about Alexei. Of course, it’s very common for mothers to say news about their children firstly before ones of anybody else. I need clarification as I am not too sure.

I doubt Maria Pavlovna would have her fingers treated in Empress´ room. And would be "goog" :). Looks to me like it is Maria Nikolaevna. Still - do you think that´s the result of the incident aboard the train? When that happened in the first place?

IMO, it's Maria Nikolaevna. I'm looking at the letter in Royal Sisters of Mercy, and the editors have not made a note to indicate it's any other Maria. I will cross-check in Complete Wartime Correspondence to make sure, and to see if there's any other mention of the injury.

Complete Wartime Correspondence does indeed specify that it was Maria Nikolaevna.

I haven't seen any of Marie's paintings, thank you for post them, she was an excellent artist,
the draws of the flowers are really beautiful.

Oh, thank you. Sarah and Ally. But, I just want to know what does the 'cut' (because it's horrible to think about Maria having four fingers in a hand!) mean? Does it mean a whole finger was cut or just the damaged portion?

Damaged part, I guess. That would be awful for Maria to have only 4 fingers!

Judging by what I've been reading about AOT's work in the lazaret, I'd guess Maria had some sort of infection in her finger that needed to be drained. Certainly not an amputation!

Hey ya'll I've only read that Anastasia's finger was slammed in a carriage door. Hmmm. Will check my sources again. An old out of print book--sorry can't think of it now.
