Yes, I have no idea what happened to Author's Obligations, and am very angry at whoever deleted it against Bob and my wishes and decision.

Thank you for empathizing with us. I don't want to be too dramatic, but when an unknown person wipes out a book thread with enough continuity to easily survive minor surgery, that person is guilty of online book burning at the very least. I myself have no intention of leaving the forum; I have a voice and until you or Bob tell me my voice is no longer welcome I intend to keep using it.

Forum Admin,

Lighten up! yourself!!!!!!  How insulting...

Today, I have tried to post 3 different times and have seen these go into the ether of "where?"....
I suspect this will do the same and you will wonder why you have one less member - or not...  You don't care really, that's obvious...

Goodbye,
Larry

To say I "don't care" is beyond insulting itself.  I have spent quite literally thousands of hours over the last years working on this forum virtually every single day. Keeping this place up, running, safe for users and relatively peaceful.  I've worked on this Forum literally every single day, 365 a year.  I've worked on the forum on Christmas day, days I was sick in bed and managed to get to the computer to make sure its ok, Ive worked on this forum late at night after spending all day at my Father's hospital bed with my Mother, and even spent money at the business center on my one vacation to Hawaii for my sister's wedding to check the forum and make sure things are well.  I have some 5200 users, about 500 different people a DAY who come in here.  I have 200 spam agents EVERY day that try to come in here and pollute this place with pornography, con artist frauds or just plain virus attacks...

We have been threatened with legal action before and now AGAIN...

Oh, and I don't get paid for this, not one thin dime. I do it because I believe in Bob's dream and the positive things we achieve here.

And so some user obsessed with post count losing three posts says "I DON"T CARE"??

There is one thread that I posted in before bed last night, that was gone this morning Tx time, and I'm not happy that it was deleted without my knowledge or permission.... I have no idea what happened to Author's Obligations, and am very angry at whoever deleted it against Bob and my wishes and decision.

Is there any way you can find out who did it and retrieve the thread?  I am sure there must be a way to tell who did it.

Rob, I am sure you know that we all appreciate what you and Bob do, and we know that you obviously care about this forum. But because of the unfortunate events of the last few days people's emotions are flying and when that happens people say things they don't really mean. Can we just try to get to the bottom of this thread being deleted without your or Bob's permission and take it from there...

I admit that I posted once on it and then regretted my interference in something that was truly none of my business.

Alixz, it becomes all of our business when someone blatantly cheats fellow members. We have to watch out for each other when stuff like that happens. If no one says anything, people like you-know-who will continue to get away with murder and no one will be the wiser. I don't think that this is what you or anyone else here wants...

Personally, I am all for deleting the post count, AND those silly titles! I never pay attention to them anyway and thought them childish.

I can vouch for the fact that neither Bob nor Rob had the slightest intention of deleting 'An Author's Obligation' thread.   The three of us had a long conversation last evening about how best to progress with that particular thread and it was Rob who said... 'The book is out there along with all the rest, it should be discussed and judged in the same way.'   The ONE caveat was, that entering into derogatory discussions about people directly involved with this publication, will not be allowed 'Full Stop'.

Bob and Rob have every right to do whatever they like with THEIR Forum.   It has not grown to this size and reputation on the basis of members' threads being unilaterally and inexplicably deleted.   They have been nothing but generous, creative, and hardworking hosts who have devoted years of their time and considerable sums of money to bring this amazing facility into all our living rooms.   So please stop making a mountain about something you know nothing about and, furthermore, is none of your business.

We all know why one thread was deleted.   My posts were deleted there and one of my posts has already been deleted on this thread.   I trust it was Bob or Rob who deleted it, and I am perfectly at peace to see it gone... with that proviso.

What would help would be if Rob could explain as much as he knows about the 'Authors' Obligation' thread.   Moderators do not have the facility to remove posts - only on the threads which they moderate.   I know nothing about computers.   Therefore, it could have been a technical glitch.   If this is NOT the case, Bob and Rob will know who was responsible - either by accident or design.

One certainly is NOT either of them.   Unless Rob does have an answer, posters will have to reach their own conclusions.

ChristineM

PS:  I have just read FA's last post.   No wonder he is angry.   Anybody who has been around this Forum for the number of years which many of us have been, know that this accusation (at this point I am not aware of who made it) is competely out of order and that Rob, of all people, has every right to be ANGRY.

Whoever wrote that............ an apology is essential -public or private and if not, kindly review your position.

Helen,

I know that you are right, but discretion is still sometimes the better part of valour.

I am not one to sit back, especially in my community, and let things go unchallenged when I feel they need to be challenged.  Every editor of every local newspaper and some of the producers at our local news stations probably take a big deep breath when they see my name on the letter head.  And I know of one CT State Legislator who has been ignoring my emails now for about a year! (Shame on her.)

The "squeaky" wheel get the grease, but sometimes it just gets taken to an auto shop and replaced.

I admire what you did on the unmentionable thread.  However, I had a gut feeling (and so did others whom I heard from in pms) that we would sign in one day and find the whole thread deleted.

I do have one question, though, how can an "unknown person" come in and wipe out a whole thread?  I know I can't do it.  And I would imagine that anyone with that capability has to be a moderator.  So, someone with that kind authority should come forward and 'fess up.

And the only numbers on the board that I find too hard to believe is the number of days that I have sat before my computer monitor and posted or read.  That one frightens me sometimes.   As much as I enjoy being here, it would seem that I should be doing more of something else!!!   (:-(

I don't think Larry was upset because he has less posts or Jenn because she is no longer a "Boyar" or whatever, I think it has more to do with the fact that posts were deleted without their knowledge and that can be very upsetting. I think the posters should at least be notified when their post is deleted and why it was deleted... This is becoming something of Stalin's Russia - especially when the entire thread is deleted without the FA's knowledge or approval!

Oh, I knew it too. That's why I saved the entire thread in my records for future "reference" ;-).

I am sure it was one of the moderators who took advantage of her priviledge as one. I have a pretty good idea who it was, as I am sure do Bob and Rob, but I won't make any accusations...

Helen--That was the impression I got from Larry as well, that the  'penalizing' was over the post being deleted, not in that he'd gone down a few posts.

I want to say, publicly (and I thought about whether to do it or not but I didn't want any speculation) that as global moderator I have the power to delete posts and threads (or move them) in their entirety. However, I did not do so in the case of either the Eurohistory thread or the Author's obligation. While I have the authority to move threads without prior approval, I would never delete a thread without the express permission of Bob or Rob.

No thread should ever be deleted. Even my lame little forum has a way to move threads to a place where the public can't see them. Here they can only be seen by mods, but can be put back at a later date. Everything, even the most festered, rank flamefests, should be archived for future reference. I guess the person who deleted the thread last night must have wanted all the info in it destroyed. What a shame.

I should have added that I don't believe in deleting threads either. My point was just that it certainly wouldn't have been done had not Bob or Rob wished it and that request has never been made to me in all my time as GM.
