The book is good. Though I don't think it contains some exceptional photos  :).
I've been trying to buy it for 2 years! It's still freely on sale in the second-hand bookstores but every time when I decide to buy it - some another wonderful book attracts my attention!!! ;D The last time (when I had thought about "The Sunset..." )I finally bought... "The Russian Empire in Photographs" - very good coffee table book with stunning images!!

Hi Teddy,

I do not think
"Sunset" is all that great. It is printed on rough paper, with large text which increases its size artificially. There are no new photographs.

Possibly the nicest feature about this book is the colorized image of Nikolai II on the dust jacket.

Since you already own Prince Michael's book, I would recommend staying with what you already have, until something better comes along.

This is a splendid book if its the one with Nikolai and Alexandra standing on the roof with the Kremlin in the background. It is worth every ruble! :D

Dear Teddy,

I like the book Sunset of the Romanov Dynasty, the large size of the book allows for very large photographs to span two pages. To me the paper does not seem rough (I have the 1992 edition) nor does the print seem too large. If the book is not too expensive then I would recommend that you purchase it.

This is a Russian language book. However to be kind to the English readers, the brief Preface is in English. Each of the 400 photographs have both Russian and English text.

The Contents page is conveniently bi-lingual, but Bokhanov's Introduction and Upit's (Head of Archival Preservation) comments are in Russian.

This book is outstanding and covers not just the Imperial Family (30 pages) but offers a wonderful portrait of Russia and her lifestyle and occupations. It also provides a vast array of images including the Military, science and education and transport and remote village life. St. Petersburgh and Moscow have their own chapter.

The title is:

Russian Empire in Photographs End of XIX - Beginning of XX Century (2004) publ. Likki Rossi, St. Petersburg, pp 304    3000 copies ;D

I searched and found that this book is mentioned quite often as a good book for pictures of the Imperial Family.

I think I have found a few errors in the identification of some people in the pictures and the book was published in 1992 so there is nothing about the Pig's Meadow bones.

However, I am glad that I found a copy for under $20 USD as it can go up over $200 USD.

I have never seen some of the photos of Khodynka field that are included and the interiors of some of the palaces.  There are chapters on just about everything and everyone including a short one on Olga Nicholaevna.

If you can find it for a good price, I think it is worth collecting.
