Countess Czaky Szell of Hungary
« on: March 08, 2008, 09:54:37 AM »
I came across a postcard that shows Countess Czaky Szell with her husband, Jan Kubelik.  I know her husband was a famous  violinist from Bohemia.  I would like to know more about Countess Czaky Szell.  Everything I find on the website just talks about her husband and that they were married in 1903.  Who are her parents?  Did the couple have any children?  Any information on this lady would be greatly appreciated.  I really know nothing about her.  I am planning to buy the postcard of this couple.  Once I do, I will post it here (if I ever figure out how to post it).  This countess looked very lovely but her husband looked alittle weird!  Is she related in anyway to the Hasburgs?  If not, then where should I place this thread?  I figured that since Hungary was once part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire that this would be a good place to place this thread.

Marianna Szell de Duka et Szentgyörgyvölgy was born in 1877 (or 1880?), her father Ludwig Szell was famous doctor and scientist, her mother who came from Poland, was an opera singer. Both her parents died when she was just a child and she was adopted by her uncle Wolfgang Szell. She was talented violinist too. She was married to a hungarian Count Koloman Csáky, but the couple was divorced three years after the wedding. She met Jan Kubelik in 1900 on his koncert in Debrecen. They were married in 1903 and lived in a small castle Bychory in Czech republic, where some of their eight children were born.
Their children were:
Maria, born 1904;
Anna, born 1904 (they were twins), violinist;
Jana (Johanna), born 1906;
Klara, born 1907;
Tatjana, born 1909;
Rafael, born 1914, died 1996, famous conductor and componist
Kristian, born 1915,
Jan, born 1917, died 1919.
Here is picture of Jan Kubelik:

Their son Rafael Kubelik:

Thank you Beladona for the info on the Countess and her family.  Is she considered to be related to the Habsburgs in anyway?  When did she died?

Jan  Kubelik seems to have the same look in all of his photos.  I hope to win the auction for a postcard that shows the Countess and Jan Kubelik together.  He had more hair and that same look on his face!  So if I get to win this postcard, then I will post it here.

Where do all the Countesses' children live--Europe or America?   Are any of them still alive?  Did Anna ever perform a concert  in America?
