Nagorny and Derevenko - The Sailor Nannies in Film
« on: November 29, 2007, 07:13:26 AM »
Silly topic I know but I'm feeling a short rant lol.

A lot of Romanov movies dealing with NAOTMAA always show Devenko but never Nargony.   I don't understand how they can forget about Nargony,   Alexei's surrogate older brother.  Alexei  IMO saw him more then his minder, an older brother figure.   He was five years older then Olga N and was very loyal to Alexei and the family.  It just saddens that they never include him in the movies.  :( :'(

Derevenko was really mean to Alexei in the end after NA's abdication, he didn't even say goodbye, he just left.I wonder if he actually hated the IF the whole time, what a hypocrite.

I wouldn't be too sure of that to be honest.
We've had this discussion a while ago, whether or not Vyrubova's depiction of Derevenko (the only source I've found so far mentioning his 'betrayal') in the end was correct, and personally, I believe it's not (entirely).

Here it is: http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php/topic,139.15.html

I don't think Derevenko 'hated' Alexei. He probably got out to save his own skin, he had himself to think about also. We talk about those that were 'loyal' like Gilliard and Botkin as being admirable, and of course they are. But Derevenko, (and probably others too) had a family to think about, and maybe decided to put themselves above an uncertain future.

I'm not sure about Anya's description of him.

Of course, we cannot completely rule out the theory that Derevenko shamelessly abandonned Aleksei, but we only have Anya Virubova's word for it...so until we find more evidence, we cannot say for sure that he was a traitor. After all, he asked to come back. Some say that it was to use the Imperial Family's situation for his own interests, but what if he really had to take care of his family, and after making sure that everything was okay, tried to come back to his duties for the Tsesarevich?

Romanovy: ventsenosnaya semya has shown both Derevenko and Nagorny, which is I think a première; you see more of Derevenko (especially with the boxing lesson, and with the Fabergé egg), and some of Nagorny (in Tobolsk and helping Aleksei off the train in Ekaterinburg).

Thanks for that Mr Harrison.  As for Devenko looking at footage of the home movies Devenko was with Alexei a lot.   I'm sure he and Nargony had shift work to look after Alexei.  When I see the footage I see Devenko is very caring towards Alexei and in some photographs he looks protective.

Anyways which other movies have the sailor Nanny's in them?   I know the Alan Rickman Movie has Devenko in it.

Yes, you guys are right, some of us have thought Derevenko was a traitor because of what Anya Vyrubova said.

Remember, too, that in film there is only a certain amount of time allowed to get everything told.

One "sailor nanny" even if not identified is enough to show the care that was taken of Alexei and who provided it.

In the original footage, are the men identified or do you just know which one is which by having seen photos of them before?

I don't think I've heard Derevenko identified by name in the documentaries I've seen. So yes, I've recognized him from pictures.
