LAST DAYS OF THE ROMANOVS, by Robert Wilton
« on: April 28, 2008, 03:10:23 PM »
Can anyone please tell me if the 1993 edition of Robert Wilton's Last Days of the Romanovs published by theLegionfor the Survival of Freedom includes the depositions of Kobylinsky and Gilliard? The price is terrific, but I'm really not interested in the book without the depositions.

Click here/url] to see the edition I'm referring to on Amazon.

Yep - I've interloaned that edition through the library, but it's out of my current price range. The 1993 paperback would be a nice alternative for $6.95, *if* it's got the depositions....

Thanks for that link. I have been reading for two days and it's very interesting, informative and helpful. I had no idea so much info was out in public view so soon. This explains a lot.

You're welcome. Take it with a grain of salt, though. Wilton's known to have made some goofs and he may be the one that's blatantly anti-semetic. (I haven't read his report recently -- my interest in the book is primarily due to the depositions of Kobylinsky, Gilliard, and Gibbes.) I'm also cautious about the guards' testimony. Does anyone know to what degree Proskuryakov, Yakimov, and Medvedev can be relied upon?

I hate to sound like broken record, but what I found interesting was stuff that applies to AA. (big surprise huh?) For example, Gilliard and Gibbes both mention plays being put on in Tobolsk, and Chatnoir had said no one could have known this. Also Gilliard clearly mentioned "medicines" and hiding the jewels, this is another thing some AA supporters have said that no one could have known (except Bux the 'traitor')To me, there being evidence of this stuff and more being out there as early as 1920 is huge. Then there was the mention of the Perm stories being invented to avoid investigations. Anyway I am only just now starting on Wilton's commentary, most of what I've read has been testimony of real people. As for the reliability of the Bolsheviks, of course there might be times they are trying to cover themselves, but at least they all agree the whole family died. It was kind of funny at the end of the 17 year old's testimony when he ranted about how he now denounced the murders, he must have been scared. I'll see how I feel about Wilton once I'm done.

On page 232, he says that the Germans were behind the husband of Maria Rasputin betraying those who tried to help the family. Is that just anti-German sentiment from 1920, his own assumptions told for the truth, or reality? (I'm guessing not reality?)

I doubt it was true either. The Kaiser was actively trying to save the IF. I think ge was leery of sending Lenin in the first place and genuinely was surprised at how fast they fell. The original idea was to  create enough chaos  to end  Russia's involvement in the war.

And with good reason -- the Whites executed some of the guards after they testified.

I can try to walk you through it -- basically, you should be able to use the blue triangular arrows at the top of the screen or the scroll bar directly beneath them to page through the book -- or you can just go to this page and click on "download pdf":
