Is it simply the hairstyle or is there a resemblance to queen Mary?

Not a very good portrait picture of Thyra:

Here a clearer but smallest version

About the hairdo, it was a fashioable one in that era :-)

I think this was based on a Kaubach paiting. I wonder if there is a photo of this painting in color.

Agree. This image has a Queen Mary style and look to it. In fact, I'd bet that amongst those who don't know Thyra, they may well think this is a portrait of Mary.

Thyra was smaller in size. Queen Mary was much bigger than Queen Alexandra.

Thyra was also sweeter in expression than Queen Mary.

Thyra actually befriended Queen Mary (when she was Duchess of York) when she first married George. She went to the last few Fredensborg gatherings after her wedding. They kept up a correspondence.

In the book "Prinz Max von Baden: Der letzte Kanzler des Kaisers" is a mention that Thyras and Ernst Augusts eldest son Georg Wilhelm was handicaped and unable to join the army.
What was wrong with him?

I read an obituary once which stated that he was lame--crippled from the effects of blood poisoning after he injured his leg as a young adult. I don't know anything further though. Other obits said he was a captain in the Austrian Army but that could a) be wrong b) have been honorary or c) have occurred before the blood poisoning incident.
